Outhouses are actually very common up north, since a lot of people have cottages without electricity or running water. Fortunately our cottage has running water....
When I visited Georgetown, SC earlier this month I remember seeing an outhouse...seemed to be a community outhouse as it was in somewhat of a small park and had a couple of picnic tables around. I'm not sure I would stroll through this community at night without a car however...
I have! I use them when I go camping up in Tennessee by Chattanoga. They are pretty fun.
There were lots of outdoor loos in British cities until surprisingly recently.
We had a cabin in New Hampshire when I was a kid. There was an outhouse, but happily, plumbing had been installed. However the plumbing wasn't too great, it was still connected to a well with an unreliable pump. To get enough pressure to flush, you had to manually fill the tank with water.
The boys used the outhouse unless the really needed to use the bathroom.
Cleveland is filled with them . . . only joking, joking!
