US Airways plans Fort Lauderdale gateway to Caribbean, Latin America

A hopeful US Airways on Monday announced plans to triple its daily flights by connecting 10 Caribbean and Latin American airports with airports in the Northeast and in Florida, including Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, effective in February.

The new service will include Guatemala City, Guatemala; Kingston, Jamaica; Panama City, Panama; and San Salvador, El Salvador, all subject to foreign approval.

Also, the airline says it plans nonstop service between the Fort Lauderdale airport and Nassau, Providenciales, Santo Domingo, San Jose and San Juan if approval is granted.

It also plans to link the Fort Lauderdale airport with nonstop service to Newark, Boston, Orlando, Tampa and Key West.

Recently, US Airways announced Saturday flights from Baltimore/Washington International and Hartford, Conn., to Fort Lauderdale, beginning in November.

"The addition of a Caribbean and Latin American gateway to South Florida allows us to continue our expansion in the region by reaching beyond leisure markets," said B. Ben Baldanza, US Airways senior vice president of marketing and planning, in a prepared statement.

Also on Monday Orlando-based AirTran Airways announced it will begin weekly nonstop service from Akron-Canton and Pittsburgh airports to the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.

The new Saturday flights will begin Nov. 20.
