What happened to I-85?

I think I can answer this. They did this work I think a few years ago. The old 85 that you speak of is now business 85 I think. They rerouted the original one with a new stretch of freeway. Spartan can probably clarify this.

Yeah, they finished the new I-85 around 1997 I think. Don't hold me to that- but its been at least 5-7 years since they've finished it. But as montonenterprises said, the old 4-lane road is still there (Business I-85), but its largely a local traffic kind of thing. Some people want to have the road renamed as I-685 so that the businesses that are near the road will not close up. As I recall- they built the new one because it was ultimately cheaper to do that than to buy the rights to expand (there is almost zero expansion room in some parts) and reconstruct bridges and all that over the old section.
