why are downtowns called DOWNtowns if the buildings grow UP. not only for that reason, but why are they called downtowns period?

Totally agreed Cotuit. Below in 1) It is the equivalent of Manhattan's downtown ie the tip of the island and below in 2) It has definitely evolved into a more generic term for a city centre.

In Sydney there are 2 answers for this...

1) Downtown can be the area of the CBD (Central Business District) down towards Sydney Harbour and

2) Some people say "Im going downtown" just meaning the whole of the CBD (which keeps expanding all the time).
