It comes from Manhattan's downtown, which is down at the tip of the island. It's evolved into a more generic term for a city centre.

Totally agreed Cotuit. Below in 1) It is the equivalent of Manhattan's downtown ie the tip of the island and below in 2) It has definitely evolved into a more generic term for a city centre.

In Sydney there are 2 answers for this...

1) Downtown can be the area of the CBD (Central Business District) down towards Sydney Harbour and

2) Some people say "Im going downtown" just meaning the whole of the CBD (which keeps expanding all the time).
