Florence Developments

Yes, that part confused me as well, and I started to think that maybe Florence had another name before becoming Florence but that is not true because of Florence Harllee and, you're correct, there was no Florence in 1719 or South or North Carolina for that matter with Charles Town (Charleston) being the capital of colonial Carolina.  The author was confused and got it wrong.

An arts festival is being held in Lake City later this month. Seems very ambitious, since it is a 10 day event. I'm hearing that Darla Moore is investing in numerous buildings in DT Lake City as well, including a boutique Hotel. I haven't been there in years, but it already seemed pretty vibrant even then. I hope to check this out.

City Council voted yesterday to annex 133 acres on the NW corner of the I-95/I-20 interchange.  The property is publicly owned (city and school district) so there won't be property taxes involved.  Still it opens up more potential annexations.  The city limit will extend much closer to the Darlington County line as a result.

I went to the Artfields event today in Lake City.  The quantity and quality of the  art is well worth a trip from 60-80 miles.  I spent 4hrs and still didn't see everything.  Plenty of variety and some pretty creative stuff.  Crowd was steady throughout the day.

I will try to post some pictures later.

Downtown is certainly on a roll.  The Hotel Florence / Victor's Bistro just opened up.  Several other buildings in the area are about to begin renovations too.  The Medical School has just gotten some funding from the city as well.  I would fully expect it to go Downtown, although a site hass not been choosen yet.

Thanks Flotown et al...I didn't realize Hotel Florence opened back in May. That's good news for downtown which needed a significant "hotel" boost...that will be superior to the Country Inn place on South Irby Street that...is ...or was, at least when I was there,..kind of scary with peculiar people coming out of the woods behind the hotel and appearing at your front door in the middle of the night...

A site has been choosen for the Medical School.  I have very mixed feelings about the Trust Building being demolished.  The 7 story building was built in the 1920's and it would seem to me could be rehab for something.

Apparently the building is even older than I thought (pre-1920's).  I hope it can be salvaged, but I am not hopeful.
