Detroit Photo of the Day

Oh my goodness, do I see foot traffic downtown?! Haha. Iam planning to go downtown as soon as I can and I'll try to bring back some pictures. As far as I can tell from what I've already heard on this forum, things downtown keep getting better and better. Now if only the Tigers could grab some more free agents...... By the way that photo from capitol park is great. It looks like a mini NYC.

Jonzo,

Yep, that's foot traffic! I've been waiting for development to spill over into Capitol Park, and it seems like it might finally be happening. Now that three of the buildings are getting renovated there are not really that many vacant buildings left. Farwell and one north of 1214 Griswold are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head. Believe it or not, the Capitol Park Building is actually occupied. Granted, the elevator is hand operated with a coat hanger and the 10th floor has never been occupied since the building was constructed in 1912, but it is occupied. I've heard that it has a pretty nice little lobby (with marble floors and such), but I have never peaked my head in there. I have never thought to do that...maybe you could go in there to take a pic?

Korn,

Jonzo was talking about pedestrian traffic, not automobile traffic. We've got more than enough auto traffic!

This is a common sight on I-75 these days:

Here is the freeway near my apartment. It is usually gridlocked most days.

The facade of the Mutual Building in Grand Circus Park shines in this shot, taken in the fall. The building is currently being restored, and even has a Subway Restaurant.

The building used to have a grand facade, but it was modernized in the 50s.

when will the renovation of this building be finished?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Michigan Mutual's renovation has been completed for a while. I have no idea when the City County building will be done. The scaffolding was supposed to come down months ago, but the last time I checked it was still there. It seems to be under eternal renovation. Haha.

The entrance to an old nightclub, The Currency Exchange, is in the United Artists Building. The club opened in 1991 in a space formerly occupied by a bank. The old vault still remains, and was used as part of the club. Unfortunately, the club was only open a few years. In 1997, the building was sold to Don Barden, a Detroit casino owner. He planned to redevelop the building, but it ended up in the city's hands. The city subsequently sold the building to Ilitch Holdings, and the building has been left to decay ever since.

Happy New Year!! We begin the new year by looking back at what we lost last year. I would've done this yesterday, but I forgot. Haha.

Albert Kahn's Grand Trunk Building on Lafayette was demolished for a parking garage that will be used by the tenants of the Dime Building.

A few blocks away on Woodward Avenue, the buildings north of 1001 Woodward were demolished for a 10 level parking garage.

Unfortunately, with the pre-demolition work for the Statler Hotel underway, it looks as if 2005 will be another unkind year for historic buildings downtown.

Designed by C. Howard Crane and constructed in the 1920s, the Film Exchange Building is located at the corner of Cass and Montcalm. The building cost $1.5 Million to construct, and was where the booking, distribution, and storage of movies occured for the theaters in Detroit and the surrounding cities. The nitrate film used in those days was highly flammable, so the danger of explosion or fire was always present. Consequently, each tenant was provided with a fireproof vault, and the latest equipment for the inspection and handling of films before they were delivered to the theaters. The last studio branch moved out of the building in 1972, and soon after, the building closed completely. Today the building is home to nothing more than hundreds of cats.

Chin Tiki on Cass Avenue downtown is best known for its appearance in the movie, 8 Mile. It opened in 1967, and was Detroit's first Polynesian-themed restaurant and lounge. Although it closed in 1980, the publicity from the movie has increased interest in the restaurant, and the owner is currently working to reopen the restaurant.

Not sure if anyone noticed this, but just above the "Beauty Supply" sign in Allan's photo below, you can see the stains and dirt residue from the old Saunders sign that used to proudly greet everyone on Woodward Ave. There was no excuse for going downtown to shop and NOT stoping in for a Saunder's ice cream float or hot fundge sunday. We lost more than just a beauty supply store when this building went down....

Wow, I never noticed that you could see the old Sander's sign before! When did Sander's close?

Sander's stores were all owned and operated by the Sanders until 1991, when they were sold to Country Home Bakers. The existing retail stores were sold off to another company, and CHB just manuafactured and distributed the products. In 2002, CHB sold Sanders and all the recipes to Morley Candy Makers. Today, Sanders is just a brand, and hundreds of stores in Michigan carry Sander's products.
