Any word on the Embassy Suites, Lofts at Stone and Rowley, Stadium Apartments, Cancer Survivors Park, Home2 Suites, or the hotel at Rivers Edge? All except for the hotel at Rivers Edge are supposed to start construction this month. So far...nothing. :(

The U.S. Treasury awarded a $38 million allocation from the New Markets Tax Credit program to Greenville New Markets Opportunity II, which is managed by Tax Advantage Group LLC and the Greenville Local Development Corp.

The program permits individual and corporate taxpayers to receive a credit against federal income taxes for making equity investments in groups certified as community development entities such as Greenville New Markets Opportunity II. The credit provided to the investor totals 39% of the cost of the investment and is claimed over a seven-year period. The community development entities use the capital raised to make investments in low-income communities.

Downtown Greenville’s redevelopment has been closely linked to financing from the federal program. Benefactors include the mixed-use Main at Broad development with the Courtyard by Marriott hotel next to City Hall, the Children’s Museum of the Upstate, McBee Station, and the Project One development that has attracted Anthropologie, Tupelo Honey, the CertusBank headquarters, Brooks Brothers and now outdoor gear retailer Orvis to Main and Washington streets.
