But if we have to change it, Im all for Jimmy Buffett. Floridays would be my first choice for obvious reasons. Then maybe Tin Cup Chalice, or Margaritaville.

I just gotta disagree. In this day and age, the fact that the official version of our state song is out and out about the simple joys of slavery down on the ol' plantation is simply embarrassing. I mean, it was written for Christy's Minstrels, a blackface group in Buffalo, New York. What the heck does that have to do with Florida?

Tradition's a sorry reason to keep something tacky like that, in my opinion. It's like having an uncle who still calls people "coloreds." He may not mean anything by it, but would you choose to make him the spokesmen for the state?

Ok... back to business... No I wouldn't make him spokes man unless he learned some new words. Same would apply to this song.

You can change the lyrics slightly, but it's still about a slave wishing he was back home on the old plantation, written by a guy who only picked the river because the name fit his meter. Call me crazy, but that's not the image I'd like to spread about Florida. Plus, there's no actual mention of Florida in the song. I'd love to have a state song as cool as Georgia on My Mind.

(We always sang, "That's where my heart is eating liver..." but we were a silly bunch.)

FL my MIL in front of me is using black. She tried AA a few times, but it always came out as Afro-American just made me laugh very hard. I just find it funny that the boy raised in Alabama has to correct the gal from Jersey. So much for stereotypes.
