Don't forget that in Europe, what they call a Liberal is like a Conservative in America. The terms have swtiched around somehow. Like heckles said, Europe is dominated by left wing politics. People we might consider to be extreme liberals (say Hillary Clinton, or Michael Moore) would be considered centrists or even right wing over there. Socialist is definately the best word to describe Europe.

I'm undecided on the death penalty. Sometimes I feel its necessary, but there are so many people who are wrongly on death row that its hard to say its a great thing. Besides, if other nations without the death penalty can have lower crime rates, is it really a deterrent?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

If someone killed someone that I loved, then I would want them dead.  That is enough justification to allow it in my book.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think that it is unfortunately necessary.

There are hardened criminals in our prisons that won't ever see the light of day again, and that have no chance of ever being a normal part of society. These people are a drain on taxpayer money. It costs tens thousands of dollars every month to feed them 3 squares and cloth them; not to mention provide them with cable tv and playstations, xboxes, and gamecubes for their entire lives.

If I had a young daughter and some nutcase broke into my house and raped her, I would want that man to die. And if he got life in prison, that wouldn't be enough. There is no place in society for that kind of person. I realize that might be an extreme example, but it makes my point- people who get the death penalty usually deserve it. There aren't that many cases in which a person was wrongfully convicted, then sentenced.

Do y'all know about the Susan Smith case? This woman drowned her two children in her car by driving it into a lake. And because she finally admitted to doing it, she got 30 years to life in prison. This means that she might get out of prison in 21 years! She drowned her two kids!

I have alot of problems with the judicial system, but the death penalty isn't one of them.

St. Johns Town Center coming along

Developers give tours and announce new tenants of the $300 million shopping center project

By CHRISTOPHER CALNAN

The Times-Union

Developers of the St. John's Town Center conducted tours of the project Thursday and announced new tenants of what will eventually be Jacksonville's largest shopping center.

The Simon Property Group and Ben Carter Properties LLC said the first phase of $300 million project is scheduled to open in March. The project, near Butler Boulevard, will include a hotel, townhouses, apartments and 1.5 million square feet of retail space.

A 240,00-square-foot Dillard's store will anchor phase one. Seventy retailers have agreed to operate at the shopping center. The developers said the most recently enlisted tenants are the Orlando-based Inland Ocean Surf Shop and the Natural Body Spa and Shoppe Jacksonville.

It will be Inland Ocean's ninth location, all in Florida, and Atlanta-based Natural Body's first Florida location. Natural Body operates day spas in Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Phase one of the St. John's Town Center will also include The Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang's and Maggiano's Little Italy restaurants.

Work on the second phase will begin immediately after the first phase is completed. Phase two is expected to be completed in 2006 or 2007. It's anchor store hasn't been announced yet.

Europeans don't consider "liberal" to be our version of "conservative." Many Europeans consider "liberalism" bad because liberals believe in a free market system only with a government that is pro-active within the free market economy, even though conservatives in this country don't understand that and equate liberalism with socialism.

Its also not good to label all Europeans as socialists in a Soviet sense. Western Europeans by majority believe in democratic socialism, not communist socialism. Also there are consistent minorities of 30% generally speaking in most regions that vote straightline"conservative." A matter of fact, Europe may be largely secular, but they have many Christian based parties that have seats in many European Parliaments. Even though they are a minority, they have their own parties in the multi-party Parliamentary system. And these parties sometimes have power when they form coalitions with other parties depending on the nation. In Germany, the conservative Christian Democrats have power when they are working in coalition with other parties for example.

Europe is interesting in that it was far more Christian based, conservative, and socially rigid then the USA until a few decades after WWII. England is historically known for its stuffiness, stiff rigid culture, and anti-diversity. All of a sudden its turning left wing and the Labour party has been elected increasingly in modern history. It used to be a Conservative nation.

They've skipped liberalism entirely. LOL Liberals were hated in Europe before for toppling the Kings and Queens of the day and replacing them with Democracy. Now Europe hates Liberals because they believe in a free market.

Liberals are now hated in the USA too.

I still say Canada is the only major liberal country on earth as of 2004.

I  Canada
