MIAMI, LOOKING NORTHWEST

And now, a very non-traditional look at the skyline, a look northwest. In this picture you can see several prominent features -- the Miami River, I-95 (the bridge crossing the river), and the Civic Center district. Behind the bridge are new apartments and condos along W Flagler St. In the far back is the Jackson Memorial Hospital campus.

By the way... the old Dade County Courthouse was originally designed to be in ATLANTA. The finished plans were rejected by that city, and Dade County bought them for a great price! That's why Stone Mountain Granite was used. It was already being quaried for the ATLANTA tower. Also, the new courthouse was built "around" the old courthouse in 1925, and the old building was disassembled once the walls were up. Andy Andrade was responsible for the current lighting scheme, which mimicked an earlier design from the 1920's. The step down pyrimidal roof was an early art deco element, and had been successfully used on the Scottish Rite "Cathedral of 1922 near the Miami River and 3rd Street. This came just after the discovery of King Tut's tomb, and the resulting Egyptian popularity that followed.

That's pretty wild. I know Orlando got a highrise designed for Tampa. A proposed project for their Westshore District became the headquarters for our county public schools (I think that's what it's for).
