The bridge at Millau, designed to blend with the sky and rising 1,125 feet from the valley floor through clouds to the tallest pillar,

officially opened Thursday. The French president pronounced the project "audacious."

I can guarantee the bridge will soon be an international hot spot for bungee jumpers and parachuters.

Holy crap! You know, I think the bridge opened around the time of France's wind storm. Now THAT would be scary!

It's in the southern part of the country near the Mediterranean coast. It gives motorists a bypass for the valley and a direct link between Paris and the Riviera (C

I would like to travel on that and by going on it, you must miss all of the traffic. I don't know too many people who would want to travel on that.

The engineering behind it is extraordinary. It's hard to tell from other angles but in this picture you can see that the guardrails on the sides look pretty high. They probably also dampen the wind. Although I'm sure getting stranded up there wouldn't be much fun.

I'm curious what the senses can pick up from up there: what sounds does the bridge make as you drive across it? Can you feel the gaps in the deck as you cross each span? What do you see on the other side? What does the air smell like up that high? Hmm... Add that to my list of places to go to someday.

^ ^ So many questions, so many unkown answers.

Norman Foster & Assoc. can even make a run of the mill cable stayed bridge look beautiful. Such an incredible setting too.

Glamorous cable stayed bridge; I think it's the true 'Skyway' with the roadway at over 230m from the valley floor. It's better than the New Bay Bridge's skyway and the boondoogle associated with it.

That Bridge is Fantastic! I'll be sure to drive over it this March when I visit France... and to take pictures too! So many questions to be answered...

I know this is an old thread but I was e-mailed a picture that offered a breathtaking shot of the bridge:

Easily one of the coolest bridges in the world. One funny thing is that...with all the problems they are having with the Bay Bridge in SFBay...this giant, gorgeous bridge was far less expensive to build than even the most conservative, and ugly, designs for the Bay Bridge replacement. They aren't even replacing the entire bridge for god's sake. The financial difference is dramatic...in the billions.
