Tri-Track

Hello Urbanites,

What are your thoughts on combining something like:

http://tritrack.net/ and

http://pedalyourselfhealthy.org/

With a little more developing of the two, you could have an all weather power assisted pedal vehicle that could be used on an interconnecting Tri-Track type system along major interstates that could allow fast house to house travel between major cities.

Think this is doable to create a high speed rail system with the flexibility of current car travel?

The TriTrack site has a calculator where you can play with the horsepower requirements for monorail travel. If you plug in the human power of 1/2 horsepower you will see that the monorail will not go fast enough to be of much use. The problem is not trip speed but rather traffic capacity. The cars need to go fast so that more people can be moved with the guideway investment. A city the size of greater Austin would take about $500,000,000.00 to build if the cars go 180 mph. If that is slowed down then the cost goes up proportionately so that at some point it is not affordable. The energy savings of a truely aerodynamic car rolling on steel wheels on metal track make the energy use very low and the resulting pollution 10 times less than cars and less than trains or diesel lightrail per passenger. This goes against the conventional wisdom for mass transit vehicles but unless those mass transit vehicles are all-electric they pollute a lot in terms of NOx emissions. There is also a pollution calculator on the www.tritrack.net site to quantify this pollution. If cars were converted to electric and made more energy efficient then the US would no longer be an energy importer but rather a net energy exporter. The air quality in cities now in non-attainment would have clean air again without having to shut down the industries.
