Are there CLT brewed (if no, then any) Sours in stores anywhere? All I see is the standard IPA's and Seasonal whatever.

Had my first sour at Legion last weekend and rather liked it.

Lots of sours at Total Wine these days, and I think I've seen quite a few at Brawleys and Good Bottle too. I'm a big fan of any sour by Wicked Weed (thats where I got into them) and Prairie.

The only truly local sours I have found are from D9 and Lenny Boy but I have not seen either in a bottle. Of those the Lenny Boy was spectacular on my first tasting and kinda blah on my second (I blame poor tap maintenance and unfreshness at Queen City Q for the mediocre pint). The D9 was good, but not great (I think I got it at Craft). If you find any Charlotte sours in bottles please let me know -- I just can't bring myself to spend the big bucks on WW sours.

It might have been a fluke but I think I noticed a 'dumbing down' of sours since they began to get popular. I very frequently found that sours from non-specialists are kinda weak in taste and appearance -- it feels like non-specialists don't invest enough time to get them right.

D9 sours are available all over in bottles....I see them at HT and many other fine retailers.  Their System of Nature series is in 4-packs of smaller bottles (12oz I think) and their others (Ezekial 25:17, Viking Fraoch, etc.) are in bombers.

NoDa has a sour in cans right now --- Stop Collaborate and Glisten.  I've seen those cans in their taproom as lately as two weeks ago....maybe Earthfare too but I don't remember for sure.

Unknown had Bright-Ass Tank Top (gose) in cans, but that's probably not around at this point.

Unknown Kitten Snuggles (bomber) is billed as an Imperial Farmhouse/Saison, but I remember it being mildly sour....and internet reviews seem to bear that out.  It can still be found in some bottle shops.

Unknown just released a Flanders Red (called Stupid Flanders) (bomber), which by style should be sour.....I haven't had it.

Agree that if you want a decent sour from a Charlotte area brewery, you need to go with D9. Some of the others around town have tried them but they were meh to me. I think Wicked Weed set the bar too high so anything I try doesn't seem to measure up. Special shout out to Grodney for adding imagery!

Now, well if you like IPAs, plenty of good breweries in Charlotte for that :) (Heist and Wooden Robot for example are killing it).

Kind of a random $.02 for the board, but given all the high profile high expectations I thought this would be worth mentioning-

Right now, the construction bid climate is really horrific for owners and designers. There is way, way too much work for too few qualified builders. We're hearing stories of projects getting killed by bids way over budget or not even having enough bidders showing up. We're talking 25% over already-conservative budgets. That means a project gets shelved indefinitely or gets 25% smaller. And consider this: it effects every single project we discuss on UP.

Ass Clown has a decent dry hopped sour that's available at a few stores - I think Good Bottle should have it, there's a few differently hopped versions.

Definitely can recommend the D9 sours others mentioned here.

Pretty darn funny.

We could do this all day, but I can't stop laughing at the first one I got: "2 crowd-funded Thai restaurants at Atherton Mill that killed five people in 2011".

This just dawned on me this past week...the amount of rooftop venues that went online last year and/or will be completed this year is amazing to me.  Whether it's residential, hotel, or other, there are a lot of options now.  Here's a list off my head, I'm sure I've missed some:

  • Fahrenheit
  • The Vue (limited to residents only)
  • Bentley's on 27
  • Ascent
  • Mint Museum Tower Apts
  • Kimpton Hotel
  • SkyHouse 1 & 2
  • Le Meridian (City Lights)
  • Epicentre Hotel
  • I think the SREE Springhill Suites appears to have a 'rooftop' event space.

*Some of these you need to be a guest or resident, but still cool to know we have them.  I think the Kimpton rooftop bar will kill it and prob the epicentre one as well.  Will also provide a different experience/vantage point than City Lights and Fahrenheit (that feeling of being engulfed by the skyline).  I wish we had a true 'observation deck' of some sort that had some significant height.  If the new 600+ tower at the Observer sight had one that would be cool, to turn it into a touristy thing, esp with all the retail it will be surrounded by.  Views inside BOA stadium and down the skyline, would be awesome imo.

I am bringing my comment here as recommended from the bad news section. Regarding policing in Mecklenburg County the number of sworn officers is not as easy to find as I had imagined. The number must be at least 2500 from the data I can find with 15 minutes of online search. This is about one officer per 400 residents, man, woman and child in Mecklenburg County. Is this a sufficient number? Is this a similar proportion to other locales? How many more officers before one suggests that it is not an issue of officers but justice system, community engagement, SES, drug culture and environment, and other issues.

I recall well the late 80's and early 90's when the murder rate was at a peak far above where it has been in recent years. The biggest driver was the crack cocaine epidemic and Jamaican gangs who shot first and always and remorselessly took lives of others and risked their own for the most paltry of returns.

Thinking about design/architecture in the multi-family realm these days: Would you say the trend toward modernism now is because of the expensive cost of brick and masonry materials, etc?

It's tough to look monderist when you're fully covered in stone or red brick. And on the other hand, when your facade is mostly hardie board you may feel you need something else to make it pop...?

Yes to that. Does it include sheriff deputies and CMS officers and State troopers (assigned to Meck County) and the town forces and UNCC officers and ALE and others? Those are all law enforcement officers with sworn duties. And seven years ago data.

City limits make comparisons tricky since some cities have a force that covers an area more intensely policed than all the surrounding areas since they are not in the police jurisdiction. Indianapolis and Jacksonville are both similar sized cities with unified city and county government like Charlotte and their force, by this measure above, is nearly the same for the three.

On this night not too many years (50 or some)  2 hydrogen bombs were dropped on eastern NC by accident of course. Very interesting read and there might not be a Goldsboro today if they had exploded. https://www.ourstate.com/hydrogen-bombs-north-carolina/?utm_content=bufferfe973&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

An interesting read... Not Charlotte specific, but this does have some parallels to our growth. Seattle, as many know is going through an urban explosion, with new high rises seemingly everywhere, driven in large part by Amazon. Many companies in the IT stronghold of the Silicon Valley are moving jobs up there because of the plethora talent and cheaper cost of living (by comparison to San Francisco) and no state income taxes. The tech companies there have done for growth what the banks have done here, but on a larger scale. What I wouldn't give for some of their views though.
