Tribe plans to start franchise of American Indian grills

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) The Mohegan Indian tribe is attempting to start its own restaurant franchise.

The tribe plans to put the first of its American Indian-themed grills at its Mohegan Sun Casino.

Designed to look like a forest clearing, the 15,000-square-foot Uncas American Indian Grill is scheduled to open in July.

Its menu will include cuisine ''indigenous to the Mohegan territory'' such as pan-roasted Mohegan clams, lobster fritters and salmon.

Tribal officials hope the $6 million construction project can be replicated in other American Indian casinos and elsewhere.

''Maybe as a stand-alone restaurant, possibly in a major city,'' said Mark Brown, the tribal council chairman.

The restaurant would be the tribe's first attempt at a franchise.

The tribe also owns the Pocono Downs racetrack in Pennsylvania and is investing in casinos in Washington and Wisconsin as part of a diversification plan.
