Flight 93 memorial draws 600 design entries

Wednesday, January 12, 2005

SOMERSET, Pa. -- Some participants of the United Flight 93 memorial design competition hand-delivered their entries to avoid missing the deadline, organizers said.

The competition to earn the right to design a memorial for the plane's 40 passengers and crew received about 600 entries by yesterday's deadline, said competition coordinator Helene Fried. The entries came from around the United States and from as far away as Japan and Romania, she said.

The memorial is for the victims of the only plane hijacked by terrorists on 9/11 that did not reach its destination. Passengers have been credited with fighting the hijackers, forcing them to crash the plane in a Somerset County field.

The design ideas will be displayed in a 20,000-square-foot space in a Somerset shopping mall. The public will be able to view the entries for five days starting next Wednesday.

A nine-member jury will review the displays and choose the finalists, which will be named Feb. 4.

The organizers of the memorial must submit a final design to the U.S. secretary of the interior by September.
