Well, after numerous delays and design changes, it looks as if this 101 storey, 492m tower would be completed in 2007. I think it was designed by the Japanese as this building represents a sword and the hole near the top is the sun. It's said that from a certain point, one of the Pearl TV towers spheres could be seen through the hole. Never before has a building been designed with a hole in the middle at over 400m above the street. This stands close to the 88 storey Jin Mao Tower, another tall building in the Pudong Area.

Note, there's also another tall tower close to the Center not yet built.

Building looks great . . . just something about the way the Chinese do business (slave labor) and put our factories out of business. Just hoping that the creativity and prosperity of the Chinese towers stand for something more then the fantastic architecture they are built with ;)

Well, in the South of Market district of SF, there is a building boom. There have been a lot of tower cranes constructing highrises all around and it has turned the former slummy, lowrise industrial area into a elegant midrise (5 to 20 story) apartment district near the SBC Ballpark. On the western side of S of M, there are tall apartment building approved for construction, like the 60 story 301 Mission.

Yuck! Emporis always screw things up; they put the status of this building sometimes 'under construction' and sometimes 'on hold' and that confuses me; which one is it!?!?!? Or is it that the construction is stopping and going? But that means that the building cannot be completed in 2007 due to these delays!! EMPORIS SUCKS!!

When did they start actually building it?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

In 1997 actually, but the project was put on hold after a few months during economical crisis in 1998. Then they started with construction again in 2001, but was yet another time put on hold. But as far as i know they have again started the construction in 3004, and its now going well...:)

I hate to rain on the parade, but those buildings just don't seem like they fit into the urban fabric of a city. It seems like an architect's and engineer's wet dream rather than something that is going to improve the urbanity of the city. Then again, it does change the skyline, bring in tourist dollars, and gives bragging rights.
