Abu Dhabi-based Al Hashemi and Dubai's Al Salem groups are launching a Dh12.25 billion commercial, residential and tourism project, Dubai Mountain City. The project will become a complete tourist destination in itself. Inspired by the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon, German architects Stolzle Sahihi Wolf and Partner have designed the mountain-shaped structure, half of which will rise from the sea. The project will be 300 metres high with a diameter of 650 metres. It will be part of a bigger complex.

The mountain 'tower' will have residential units, villas, gardens, 1,000 apartments, hotels, 150,000 square metre shopping mall, a five-screen cinemal complex, restaurants and underground parking for 12,000 cars. Some of the properties will be for freehold sale to expatriates. Sultan Salem Al Qaiwani, general manager of Al Salem Group, said: "The developers are investing 40 per cent of the total cost. We are open about the funding and are talking to other investors."

Construction is expected to start late next year. Hans-Joachim Wolf, president of Stolzle Sahihi Wolf and Partner, whose company is setting up a branch in the UAE, said: "The project will take three years to complete." (The Gulf News)
