Several Southeastern states seceded from the Union leading up to the Civil War. There was one interesting exception, Winston County Alabama. The state of Alabama along with the other Southern states withdrew from the union but Winston County voted against it. They were the lone county, much less state in the entire South to remain with the Union thus earning the nickname "The Free State of Winston County.

This is fun.

Florida also lays to an even older city.  St. Augustine is merely the oldest continually inhabited city (by european settlers of course).  Pensacola was settled 6 years before St. Augustine but later abandoned.

St. Augustine, FL is America's oldest city founded in 1565 by the Spanish. It was founded forty-two years before the English colony at Jamestown, Virginia, and fifty-five years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts.

I believe this was already pointed out. It is the oldest European founded city. Both Acoma in New Mexico and Oraibi in Arizona are believed to be founded around 1100-1300 and are still both inhabited.

My hometown, Sanford, NC refers to itself as the "Brick Capital of the USA" because in the 1950s the area produced 40% of all of North Carolina's bricks, and, in turn, NC produced 10% of the US total. Brick production is still a big deal there, but I couldn't find any current statistics.

To celebrate New Year's, they actually drop this huge replica of a brick.

The Andy Griffith Show was based Mt. Airy, NC.

From www.mayberry.com

It's impossible to pinpoint Mayberry precisely since the writers were not always consistent, but here are a few clues: 1. In "Barney and Thelma Lou, Phfftt!" Barney says it's 12 miles to Mt. Pilot (the fictional "Mt. Pilot" is presumably in the same place as the real town of Pilot Mountain, NC.) 2. In "The Luck of Newton Monroe" Goober says it's 60 miles to Raleigh. In "Andy's Rich Girlfriend," Barney says it 55 miles to the capital. 3. In "The Rehabilitation of Otis" and "The Battle of Mayberry" Mayberry is said to be in the northern part of the state. By consulting a map of North Carolina and using these clues, it's possible to get a pretty good idea of where Mayberry is. It's roughly in the same geographic location as Mt. Airy.-- Paul Mulik

within a 30 mile radius of Andy's birthplace in Mt. Airy, NC, are the following towns: Lawsonville, Walkertown, Crumpler and Taylorsville. The names of such characters as Floyd Lawson, EllieWalker, Helen Crump and Andy Taylor naturally

come to mind. Is this simply coincidence?
