I think both cities' infrastructures compare well. Downtown development too.

Nashville has made greater strides in recent years in its public schools. Their school performance is up to and in several areas exceeds the national average.

I'm no shill for Pedro Garcia (in fact, the school board has given him notice that his contract won't be renewed). I don't even know if Garcia truly deserves credit, but he was the one in charge during this time. Nashville has received a lot of national recognition for its improvements.

I think the growth rate of Nashville's labor pool is also an advantage (it helps to have 17 colleges and universities in the city too). And finally, I think having all of its suburbs in the same state is an advantage. As Franklin sponges off of Nashville, it's still a part of a unified planning agency. I think Memphis is at a disadvantage in this area.

I hate the fact that Memphis' suburbs are in three different states because instead of unity, there is division. It makes every municipality in the area compete (and the competition is fierce) for just about everything.

This doesn't have to be handicap. Several of our largest metro areas straddle three state lines. NYC is spread over NY, NJ and CT. Chicago covers IL, WI and IN. Washington is in DC, MD and VA. If the community plays its cards right, it can use the multi-state region to its advantage. Instead of using the resources of just one state government, it can leverage three.

Keep in mind that while Memphis may be the 2nd largest metro area within TN, it is by far the largest one in within both MS and AR. Some would say that MS/AR are more interested in Memphis than TN!! After all, AR has been pushing hard to get an auto plant built in Marion. DeSoto County is the fastest growing county in MS, and with the Gulf Coast casinos all wiped out by Katrina, the gaming revenues coming in from Tunica are now more precious to MS than ever.

^ Yep. Having the metro in two other states means Memphis gets two other states to build infrastructure that will benefit it(like cdarr said the Marion mega-site and the Tunica Casinos), of course those states get benefits from Memphis as well. So its really a win-win situation in alot of cases.

Yeah, I agree. I've never really understood the argument that places like Tunica really hurt Memphis. Most of the employees there live in Memphis. Tunica has 9 casinos and over 6000 hotel rooms, mostly built by Memphis construction firms hiring Memphis workers.

About half the I-269 loop around Memphis is in Mississippi, and paid for by the MDOT, as is I-22 between Memphis and Birmingham.

The Univ. of Memphis has reciprocal tuition agreements with the neighboring MS and AR counties. Memphis students can attend the Univ. of Mississippi's Southaven branch as well.

Etc., etc.

I'm happy with development in both cities. Each one is really taking its own path through life and they've truly become very hard to compare outside of size and as of next year which one will have the best Macy's - LOL.

I grew up in the Nashville area (Dickson County) and love it - nowhere can ever be like it in my opinion. I moved to Memphis about 3 years ago and now I love it here too. There is completely different vibe about the city, during the holidays I hear more Elvis music than at any other time of the year. So much to the point that I now own an Elvis Christmas Album - LOL! Anyway, take it from someone who has lived in both cities that they're very difficult to compare.

For years and years, beginning in the early 70's, I drove from New Orleans to see my parents in Memphis every Christmas. It was about a good 6 hour drive, and every other mile all through Mississippi, I heard nothing but "We'll ah have ah ah Bluuuue Christmas" on the radio.

I think having a city with a tri-state metro is and can be good without the competition. A lot of companies pack up and leave Memphis for DeSoto after their PILOT runs out, and DeSoto is also trying to lure companies away from Memphis. Someone said it before and I agree; that's not growth, its just redistribution. If all three states could REALLY work together on a growth plan for ALL instead of their own areas, it would be an even greater benefit for the Memphis MSA.

The most important word in that entire post is "MEMPHIS." This area would be nothing without the city of Memphis. What we need to do is demand better development and leadership to keep companies within the core of Memphis. There is nothing wrong with growing the suburbs but at some point all we're going to have left is a city full of empty buildings.

I-20? Isn't it I-22 their going to build between Memphis and Birmingham...I'm lost ;). Where did this I-20 talk start.

I haven't heard of I20, but I have heard of I22. I think I22 is US 78. I also have heard of US 72 being turned into an interstate, at least going east from Memphis/385.

Is this thread still going? LOL!! WOW!

It was one of those forum quirks.

Until a couple days ago, the last post in this thread was mine on July 20th.

Prophetically, perhaps, my post was good-naturedly dissing both cities and saying "Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans". July 20th-pre-Katrina.

A week ago, that July 20th post showed up as being "today", which made it seem like there was something new. There wasn't.

Are they planning on doing the Atlanta-Memphis interstate, or are they still discussing? I have decided to drive all the way to Memphis from Atlanta (Rome, GA) instead of I-24 towards Nashville on Thrusday. I believe the propsed interstate should be moved a little south closer to Gadsden, AL/Cedartown, GA. Mississippi already have the interstate (US-72) up ready to connect between Atlanta and Memphis.

For those of you that are interested in roads. This site gives the high priority corridors Corridor 7 Memphis-Atlanta via Huntsville. Corridor 11 I-565. Corridor 10 I-22 Memphis-Birmingham Birmingham People would like Corridor 28.
