So I know since I'm no longer moderator here, it's hard for me to make rules, but I think the Detroit section lately is in need of clean up. And that begins with what is posted.

First off, all the above photos and dialogue is acceptable because it's in the Detroit OFF-TOPIC forum. Ramblings, dream projects, jokes, spur of the moment thoughts BELONG here. Although I can do without the fat ugly women.

- Please avoid posting the word CONFIRMED in your post title unless you can actually cite from a CREDIBLE news source that the project or event is indeed CONFIRMED.

- Don't post a thread about Pie in the Sky Dreams and Wishes for Detroit. For example "If National City were to move their building from Troy to downtown..." Well they aren't, and they don't plan on it anytime soon. These threads are a waste of our time, but there is a place for them. Post your idea here in the off topic thread. The main forum should contain USEFUL information.

- Please do not generalize and stereotype other races or ethnicities in your posts. Even if you are trying to be funny or subtle, you aren't Dave Chappelle, and many people will probably lose respect for you.

- Please try to use the search function, or go back a few pages to try and find the answer. There must be a few dozen threads on the Casinos, Michigan Central Station, the Detroit Subway System, the Book Cadillac, and the new Wings arena. We don't need the forum getting clogged and confusing.

This is me trying to be nice and offer a suggestion. Overall, people tend to find me to be pretty nice on the forum, but lately I've been a little pissed off with "junk" that has proliferated on the Detroit boards in recent months. This doesn't mean we can't joke around once in awhile in the threads, but some of the material posted here has gotten to be annoying.

monsoon, Allan, and GRdad, I hope you don't mind, but no one seemed to be saying anything, and it seems like a lot people have been upset lately.

Your suggestions are always welcome. I am open to hearing any new ideas and such that you guys might have. I agree that things have been getting out of hand, and it is my fault since I'm not able to monitor things as much as I used to. I have been extremely busy with school and other activities, leaving little time for socialization and reading the forums.

DetroitCity's signature has been removed. I have a dialup connection at home, and I had the signatures and avatars turned off for faster page loading. They are now turned back on to prevent such obnoxious graphics from overtaking the forum again.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm one of the 25% of unemployed city of Detroit residents, so I have lots of free time to post here on my slow internet connection (28k). Actually, I have about 3 jobs, but none of them really provide a great deal of regular income. I get by...barely. I make enough to pay rent and eat. I work in the burbs, and since we don't have a mass transit system (not even a bus system today - no Smart buses don't count!), I spend more than half of my paycheck getting to work with $3.49 gasoline.

That seems to be the story for lots of people lately. Not the guy who stands at the corner of Dragoon and the Fisher Service Drive though...he makes $300 on a bad day, and is far from homeless. Maybe I should take up panhandling too. I've got lots of ratty old clothes from urban exploring, and I've got some old cardboard to make a sign out of. How'd that look on a resume? Haha.

On the bright side, it is a very nice day today. I had to go to the new Staples on E. Jefferson that everyone complains about, so I took the scenic route....

Up my street to Michigan Ave to see the Galston, which they are still re-restoring after the fire, down Michigan to the MCS, where I stopped to see some workers who were cleaning up inside the fence with a mini-bobcat. Took a gander through Corktown, stopped by Eph's to order lunch. As usual, it was excellent, and less packed than the downtown location. Headed down 6th, past where the FBI's new suburban-looking glass box and 200 acres of green lawn are going, across the Lodge, and past the Fort Shelby. Workers are busy at the Fort Shelby. Several dumpsters have been brought in, including one from an architectural salvage place. I hope they plan on recreating and returning the period details...or at least those that are left...in the lobby and the Crystal Ballroom. Anyway, from there, I went up to the Book Cadillac, where the facade is almost entirely cleaned, they are installing windows, and the mechanical penthouse is being rebuilt. I ended up in Foxtown, where some workers were seen at both United Artists and Moose. I drove up Clifford to the Eddystone, where I was relieved to see that the scrappers were not at work, for once. Down Woodward, and then over through Lafayette Park, ultimately ending up in the parking lot in front of Staples. I took a different way home, through Greektown, down Fort Street, and then up Livernois. When I arrived home, I saw about 20 people working on fixing up the vacant two family flat directly across the street from where I live (that seems to be a trend lately, even with the economy as crappy as it is). :)

Ok, back to the job hunt....

Allan, what makes you think people don't like that staples? Granted, as a small business person I love the convenience (being only 4 blocks from home, but other than that it always seems busy in there. Is it the strip mall concept that is disliked? In my opinion, any strip mall with a fudruckers is well worth my time and money!

In response to the last few comments..."Never underestimate what a Rock Financial move to downtown could do for this region." Additionally, many other firms moving back to the core of activity. The days of waste "should" be over. We're a state, region, and city in crisis. And the reality of that is the growing hardships of the educated middle class.

Check out this newsblurb. It seems The Port of Detroit's cargo is up over 60%. The blurb gives no reason why, though. Hopefully, it's not an anamoly, and there is good reason for it.

Port of Detroit cargo up 60%

International cargo tonnage through the Port of Detroit during the 2006 Great Lakes shipping season grew 60 percent over its 2005 volume, from 375,000 metric tons to 600,000 metric tons.

The growth earned the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority and its stevedoring company, Nicholson Terminal & Dock Co., the Robert Lewis Port Pacesetter Award, presented May 18 during National Transportation Week observances in Detroit by St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp. Administrator Collister Johnson Jr.
