Morris Lapidus comes to mind, as well as Victor Gruen.

Both of them were brilliant architects with good intentions, but both suffered a lot of disrespect of their work: Lapidus, because his Fontainebleau hotel was considered to showy for modern architecture, and Gruen, because his ideas about suburban planning and 'new cities' were perverted into the glut of malls that many architects and modern planners despise.
