September 8: Affordable Housing Forum + Panel Discussion

Thursday, September 8, 2005: 2-6pm

Green Party Councilman David Segal has been hosting a series of community education sessions/forums dealing with local economic and poverty related issues. The Housing Network and the Statewide Housing Action Coalition, is working with David to organize a forum on the issue of affordable housing (or lack thereof) in Providence. A panel of speakers will give brief presentations and then engage the room with open coversations. Come on down - hear and be heard.

Wow, how timely.

I was just going to ask you guys what the situation was regarding lower end condo projects in Providence...you know, in the 200-250K range. Wouldn't that be extremely popular and a developer goldmine? Or is that range too low in PVD (Tampa housing is much cheaper than PVD) ?

Maybe I am way off, but imagine a Downcity condo tower of 30 floors in that price range. Reality check please.

A press conference announcing the new West Side Arts District - Artist Tax Exemption in the Valley, Olneyville, Atwells and West Broadway neighborhoods - will be held SEPT 7 at 10:00 am at The Steel Yard, 23 Sims Avenue. Mayor Cicilline, Rep Steve Costantino, Sen Frank Caprio, and Kip McMahan among others will talk about the district.

The district offers State Income Tax and Sales & Use Tax for eligible artists that live and work in the district.

Ch 10 reported this morning that a groundbreaking was going to occur today that will convert a mill building into 220 apartments with a parking garage, an indoor pool and a japanese garden, but they didn't say where. Does anyone know what project this is?

A conference to explore how we can turn the parks and greenspeces of Providence into the community assests we all deserve will be held Saturday, October 22 from 8:45am - 3 pm at the Silver Lake Community Center on Plainfield St. The conference is sponsored by Citywide Green, a Providence Parks & Greenspace allilance in association with the Prov Park Dept.

Citywide Green, a Providence Greenspace alliance, invites you to attend Your Neighborhood Park: a conference on Parks in Providence. This conference brings together community members with an interest in parks and open space to discuss how residents and City officials can work together to make Providence parks a community resource for all to use and enjoy.

Parks are an important part of the community; they help create our quality of life, refresh the air and our spirit, provide a place for recreation, and can be a cornerstone for community revitalization. It was on this premise that Citywide Green was established.
