Tacoma Narrows Bridge

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is infamous for collapsing into the water in 1940. A rebuilt suspension bridge was completed in 1950. Today work is underway to complete a second very similar looking span next to the existing span. It is very unusual to see two suspension bridges right next to each other!

Nice.

As an engineering student, the collapse of the original bridge was shown to us as an example of something that was assumed to be well designed, absolutely failing. Because it took so long there is remarkable film of the oscillations caused by the slight wind that caused the eventual collapse. Apparenty the wind was just right to hit the resonate frequency of the structure.
