Do windows on buildings like this have any privacy features? Can everyone in the city see every action you do at night with the lights on?

good question. i know @ night, when lights are on in the arlington (pinky), you can see in pretty well. so, i guess if you want to avoid that you need to go as high as you can... i hear the penthouse looks good. :)

I lived on the 18th floor off of State & Superior in downtown Chicago. Most all of the buildings around there are residential high-rises. With your naked eye you couldn't see a thing really but bring out the binoculars and you can peep on anyone you really wish. I used to spy on the workers in the IBM building, haha!

It is a good idea to close the curtains in any house or condos, no matter where you live.

I know someone who lived in Cary, NC, who went to close the blinds one night when getting ready for bed and found someone standing outside the window, peeping in. Can you imagine how creepy that must have been? She was a young girl, too, so i think that just amplifies the creepiness.

I know another anecdote about the need to close your blinds. In Singapore, they arrested a man for, ahem, 'doing something' in his own living room with the curtains open (by mistake). Someone in an apartment across the street saw him and called the police. He ended up going to jail for 'doing something' in public, because they deemed that even in your own home, it is a public space until you close the curtains. Talk about embarassing. I'm sure it is the only country in the world that legally endorses peeping toms :).

Not to continue off subject, but my friend and his girlfriend live in a step-down apt. in Manhattan right next to an elemantary school, and a couple of weeks ago she heard a bunch of young boys outside their bathroom window (which is about 2-3 feet above ground-level and faces into the school yard). She heard one of the boys saying "The girl is in the shower again!".....boys will be boys.

I'm astounded that a place like this even exists, much less in Charlotte. The amenities are totally blowing my mind.

Biometric fingerprint security allows only residents to access the parking garage and core of the building.

How cool is that?

I'm guessing the "elevators" will look something like this:

i agree with you about the need for that in the designs... but i think it just doesn't show up very well in the model.

the rendering of corner of pine and 5th is much richer and friendlier than it appears on the model. Also, there are doors throughout the streetlevel on 5th... which is only barely visible on the model... but will supposedly be street retail. And then there is a building entrance in the center of the pine street facade. Even though there is only one entrance on pine, i think it will still be fairly pedestrian friendly because it has a landscaped flower box section.

one thing, too, that i think softens the effects that you are worried about, is that this building's site is only 1/4 of the block... so with the other buildings that are already on the block (like the firehouse), and those that will eventually be built at 6th and pine and along graham, will help to keep the area pedestrian friendly.

The rendering I was referring to is now online.

You can see the retail, the fancy materials, the fountain, the planting box, and the windows into the lobby. I think that with those details at the ground level, that this will be pedestrian friendly. The rendering shows lots of people milling around, so that must be true :).

That will make my walk home from work a little more enjoyable... Do you know what buildings are going to fill in the remaining 3/4 ths of the block? You mentioned the firehouse, any midrises?

There will be a really small area of the parking lot left untouched right across the street from the Harris Teeter. It will be interesting to see if anything goes there. Maybe a midrise? Who owns that land anyway?

Yes, and across Graham Street from the Cotton Mills. It is fairly cool that such a large project is taking up less than 1/4 of the block.

I believe that preffered parking owns one of the lots (surprise surprise), and the other was recently bought by Walker Wells and Chris Branch (who own FMW and The Boulevard Co. respectively).....also, the firehouse's property extends all the way back to 6th, and if I'm not mistaken, BofA owns a piece too.

The owners are definetly the type who would want something to happen, but also the type to charge you out the a$$ for the dirt.

  • 2 weeks later...

very cool, but over the top. I hope prospective buyers realize that most, if not all, of these marketing costs are baked into the price of their units.

Damn skippy. On a side note, I saw that someone is already trying to resell a FAP unit at $500 per square foot. While others are still available at better prices. They're in for a two-fingered shocker.

I count 39 stories on the ice sculpture (give or take a couple). Wonder if there is any meaning to that?

"I'm a sculptor, not a mathematician! Bah!"

"Gee, is it hot in here, or is it just me?"

Even better, it means you've got too much time on your hands.
