NASCAR Hall of Fame

The HOF is looking good. There are some obvious flaws, but they have less to do with Ms Setzo's design than the requirements of the City of Charlotte and the Convention Center (read: horrible two story overstreet walkway connecting the CC and the HOF). Time will tell if the city is really concerned with putting pedestrians on the street or with keeping conventioneers out of the notoriously bad Charlotte weather.

You will all be happy to know that the cutouts/streaks in the silver band are back. I know that was a complaint from some on here. Also, there doesn't appear to be too much dead space around the 4 sides of the building. The worst is the half block of Brevard from Stonewall. There are no entrances to anything, but they at least put in window "showcases" so that its not a blank wall. The other half of that block from 2nd st will have the Nascar Grille with outdoor seating, and some other retail. The Stonewall side is being planned for some type of studio. And Caldwell will have the office tower and an entrance to the rest of the building. Its not exactly perfect, but hopefully they will take some of our ideas into consideration. (trust me, we gave them plenty...)

That's good, the cutouts are crucial for making the design work.

The two story walkway... that's odd.

"trust me, we gave them plenty"

What were some of the ideas that were given? Did they respond?

The meeting was done charette style. We sat in small groups with facilitators and provided feedback. The next meeting will show which of those ideas were incorporated into the design. Some of our table's ideas were to:

  • make the roof of the building "green". It would be both representative of the infield (the building is a giant oval) and environmentally friendly
  • pay attention to details and not let every good design aspect get value engineered out (remember how the cutouts went away?)
  • use the front plaza as a gathering point on race/football game days and view either (sport) on the jumbotron attached on the front of the building (the NASCAR folks wanted to use the 250-seat theater inside for watching live races--we thought it would be far too small and not offer the average fan access to what he/she wants--beer, barbeque and the ability to move around freely and "conversate")
  • lose the double decker overstreet walkway connecting the HOF to the Convention Center (lower level is for service, upper for patrons (check out uptown living's last photo post on page 70 and see how bad this is)
  • In the rendering, as well as the site plan, we were shown large LOGOed transporters on the plaza. Three Mack trucks on the front of the plaza with "NEXTEL", "VIAGRA", etc on the side. Terrible...must go!
  • The office tower needs something. Maybe use it as the beacon that was included on the very first design. Put the name "NASCAR" vertically on the precast vertical bands that are on the southeastern and northwestern sides of the tower.
  • Questioned how the museum would treat the historical beginnings of the sport (illegal activity of running moonshine) and how that would play out (will they whitewash over it?)

We had a fun table. Unfortunately, I don't think they are going to take our idea of chicken bones encased in Lucite as the plaza's building materials into serious consideration. Although a "smell-o-rama" section inside the building was not out of the question. Imagine going into a Pei Cobb Freed structure with the scents of beer, fried chicken, petroleum products, and burnt rubber all melded together.

Miesian Corners: "You never know who lurks around here"

---

Imagine yourself being deeply involved with a large project in Charlotte (or anywhere). Wouldn't you be at least curious enough, to see what the "buzz" is among the public? At least at some point during, the year or two it takes to roll out?

Google up {city name} and {project name} and you'll likely find a UP thread quickly appear, on all the majors...

It's probably how most of us found UP.

At the Nascar design charette, they said that if the office tower happens, which it appears it is, the total number of spaces in the underground deck would go up to 1000! That will be incredible amount of spaces available to off hours to the benefit of the convention center, the Brevard Street activity, and to uptown in general.

Also, while many are critical of the design, having a decently tall office tower on Caldwell, really helps to drive activity and economic activity east into 2nd Ward. That will make a tremendous difference that I don't think has been completely realized.

Also, I must say, that while I don't love the window cases they'll have on Brevard between Stonewall and [First], they aren't terrible. They certainly aren't anywhere near like 5th Street as I originally thought. That said, I hope they do some utilities between the cases to serve street kiosks during events. Good news was that between [First] and 2nd/MLK, the Nascar Hall of Fame will include the Nascar Cafe with outdoor seating, and the Nascar store. That makes it much more active on Brevard than I originally anticipated.

My other primary concerns would be to include a green/grass roof on the Hall of Fame. It would have the symbolic value of appearing like an infield from above, be far more attractive, be the subject of positive press, and lower heating/cooling and roof maintenance costs. There is no reason NOT to add this as part of a building that has long term plans.

  • 1 month later...
  • 2 weeks later...

At this point, the only thing I like about this building is the ribbon. I'm glad they finally removed the semis from the plaza, but I can't stand that they added more walkways and didn't do anything interesting with the roof like a green roof or at least some thing decorative. I am so tired of the city filling uptown with buildings with Walmart roofs. Argh.

Don't have much info on this yet, but at the City Council meeting last night they did a mid-year budget review and listed the Brevard/Caldwell/277 Reconfig as a "red light" project. That means it is over budget and is being reworked. You will remember that this street reconfiguration was part of the funding for the NASCAR HoF with the State and City reconfiguring the interchange and selling off property for development.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more details on this. It is not a show stopper, but expect to see some changes in this project.

I didn't mention this at the time (I don't think), but the many millions approved by city council in their budget for the "Brevard Improvements" are now sucked into this project, simply to repaint the lines on Brevard and Caldwell for a couple blocks, and then spend the rest to cover the costs of the interchange.

For all the times that I have mentioned that that part was funded, it was apparently some sort of trick of wording during the budgeting phase. Apparently, the streetscape improvements are not funded.
