I think that a casino would be bad news for RI but worse for Providence as it would draw cash away from the capital. If there was a way to have one in Providence proper that would be a different story but given my moral opinion of casinos anyway, I would vote nay just the same.

No, though mainly because it would then be too easy to gamble away my money ;)

Seriously, though, I'm not opposed to casinos in general. But I am VERY opposed to a giant gaming empire playing a native tribe like pawns for the sake of circumventing the law.

No go on the Casino. They do not generate money. They do not produce any product. They are not even real entertainment, in the sense that if you spent your money there you not even be supporting local artists or actors (as when you patronize a local theatre or commuity event). You would be supporting the shareholders who own the company and live out of state.

I'm not in favor of an indian casino in West Warwick. It would be a catastrophe for several reaons:

1) The surounding area would become a new city as related services built up to follow the $$. This means Division St, Route 2, that whole interchange for a mile around would explode like a brain tumor. Hotel towers, giant restraunts blazing with neon, massive parking garages, shuttle buses lined up for miles, the highway clogged every sat and sunday night......my god. Let the indians sell cigarettes.

2) Providence would probably lose investment as local developers followed the $ to W Warwick.

I'm only in favor if its built on Allen's Ave, near downtown Prov. Build a big marina, make it an adult theme park. Other than that, a solid NO.

I say no for all of the reasons already stated,

HOWEVER,

when I was in grad school, a professor of mine, also a community economic development consultant, had done a study on the economic impact of a casino on someplace in Mississippi, I think Biloxi. To the surprise of many, especially her, the casino actually had a POSITIVE impact on education, crime (!), tax burden, and economic activity. it was pretty interesting, because the findings went against many of the accepted assumptions of negative impact from these stand alone casinos...

Providence should come up with a way to draw people into the city, perhaps a river boat that cruizes out into the harbor where passangers can gamble their hearts out, with the proceeds going toward the many public projects goin on, improving schools, etc. In this way the city can generate revenue without worrying about drawing shady characters into the city. As it is, if you are going to build all of these "luxury" condos that sell for 300k+ it makes sense that these buyers have the disposable income to burn and probably would take advantage of such entertainment venues in their backyard. It could be a cost effective way to generate revenue for the city and state.

Judging from a recent post on the Projo blog, it seems that Chief Sachem and Patrick Conley are going to team up to propose a casino on the Narragansett Piers waterfront development. No independent confirmation on this but there's a press conference at 1pm. Stay tuned!

I'm still against a casino, but as I've said before, if we must... it should be in the city.

I know Cicilline is against casinos. Does anybody know if that area currently zoned to allow a business such as a casino to operate there? I'm just wondering what type of regulatory hurdles would need to be cleared before construction of the project can begin (from a zoning/planning standpoint).

Damn... Just when Narragansett Piers was starting to sound like a good idea. Cotuit's right. If it's going to be done, do it here (especially if they promise no concert and entertainment venues so as to not kill the arts scene here). But there are a lot of forces in town (from PPAC and others in the arts and entertainment venues, to likely every neighborhood group, to safety avocates, etc) who are going to come out against this hard...

Great! Now the casino can join all the sex clubs and strip clubs. All we need is a few pawnshops and it will look identical to Vegas! Way to go!

I have no problem with the strip joints on Allens Ave. and think they add to the city. Certainly the Puritans up in Mass. need a release valve before the sticks come flying out of their collective asses. If they want to come here to let their hair down a bit, I say great, and let's suck as much money out of their pockets as we can while they are here. Montreal's reputation as a 'sex capital' of North America certainly hasn't hurt that city at all.

That said, I'd rather we had a well regulated adult industry in Providence. Rather than loopholes, handshakes, and a bumbling group at the Board of Licenses being the avenue which the industry takes to establish itself.

PS: I'm not surprised that Connolly would need Harrah's money to get his crazy scheme off the ground. Not that I don't like his scheme for Providence Piers, I just can't understand where the money would come from without a big backer like Harrah's.

i am curious why you're against the casino...

i think it could help bring people to RI. i also disagree that it would be well-suited for providence. i just don't see how providence could handle anymore traffic than we already have coming into the city. the only place i could see it working in providence is on the waterfront there and building up that area. but i agree that if it goes in providence, it shouldn't be taking away from our current arts and music scene. but this could be said about it anywhere in RI... it might attract bands that would otherwise come to providence.

i think it could bring some extra money to the state, but it shouldn't be built with free handouts and be allowed to get away tax free.

Very well said. I couldn't agree more.

Well considering Foxwoods is about to double thier size within the six months, i would say there is a market for this industry.

Considering Conoly had hoped to make his peir a cruise ship departure site, this would be the best way for him move forward. To put another spin on this and wrap up some of the other posts going on today, this would be the best way to bring in a professional sports team.

i am curious why you're against the casino...

The state is way too dependent on sin taxes to fund itself as is.

The deal that Harrah's is trying to ram through is horrid.

The state government continues to be too corrupt to handle this kind of deal.

Patriarca may be gone, but the mob is still active in this state.

Casinos suck money out of the pockets of our communities most vulnerable individuals and as such add strain to our social services programs.

The aformentioned traffic concerns (West Warwick is no more equipped to handle it than Providence).

If you think poverty is an issue now, wait and see if a casino is built. It will undermine all revitalization efforts. Period. Has anyone ever been outside the Vegas strip and see what Vegas really looks like. If a casino was ever built here, petty crime, murder, bankruptcies, and neglect would all exceed previous records. :(

Perhaps so, but what is the difference between this casino and Lincoln Park and Newport Grand besides scale and games? Wouldn't the ultimately spur the same social difficultiies?

Lincoln Park and Newport Grand have created social problems all across the state, but not on the scale that a mega- casino would. Both NG and LP only have slots and neither have full-scale entertainment options. ( clubs, restaurants, and hotels) They both are on buslines, but are not easily served from people all over the place. Providence is the central hub for transportation from all over the state. It's much more accessible to a bigger population than those other areas. Furthermore, if a casino were built, LP and NG would be eventually out of business. That's why they were so adamant about the Harrah's proposal. I agree, Cotuit, that it is "sin" development. The negatives outweigh the positives. ...IMO...I'm not against sex clubs, but I think they could more tastefully fit into heir surroundings. Allens Ave. would be much better off being redeveloped economically as waterfront property than as a combat zone. There are other industrial areas in the city that would suit just fine and are within the realm of the zoning ordinance.
