Macau would be another example. Casinos should not, however, be looked upon as the sole economic salvation of a city or area. While I think they have been good for Mississippi, there's a serious downside as well. I'm not sure that too many places take this into consideration before the onward rush to the slots begins.

3) Patriarca may be gone, but the mob is still active in this state. This is weak at best. The FBI has such a commanding presence at major casino's or venues were games of chance involve $.

1984 - the end of an era on the hill.

Allens Ave could soon be known as sin alley.

It's all better suited for suburbia like Mohegan or Foxwoods, I think its bad news in the core of Providence.

2) If better leadership came in to change the Harrah's deal to a non-sucking version, Harrah's would just take their money and go play with some other tribe in some other state (which I would not be sad to see happen).

3) I'm not saying the mob would run the casino the way they did in the Vegas heyday, but they'd be happy to nibble at the scraps. Loansharking...

4) I would prefer that we not have to suffer the social ills associated with a casino to begin with, rather than have assurances that the casino would cover their costs (which I'm sure they wouldn't, especially since they would be so difficult to quantify).

Small money loan sharking is right... the "mob" is still around I guess but not like when my dad was my age!

Can anyone who's been in Rhode Island longer than me educate the rest of us on the circumstances under which this came up to a vote... ...Racist?

The racist thing came from the infringement of sovereign lands on which the Narragansett Indians sold cigarettes. I believe this was a violation of their rights.

It passed a vote in West Warwick in 1999. I voted YES. It failed in a separate referendum statewide by a narrow margin, but it will again face a vote once a question which will honor the constitution can be composed.

I heard Newport is being sold and a hotel is proposed, turning it into a gambling destination. Don't know if that is still the case.

Our Governor talks about being opposed to casinos in RI yet approves the expansion of the number of machines in our existing casinos. A large part of out state's revenue is generated from gambling be it lottery, keno, scratch tickets, or our casinos.

There was a major investment made in Lincoln Park recently and that company has the land and the connections to be a player in Rhode Island's casino gaming future. The company investing in Newport Grand has a major stake in the redevolopment of Newport's North End, which is a depressed area which the video slot business has helped revitalize since NG's renovation from a Jai Alai parlor.

Former Sen. John Chaffee also made some moves in Washington to prevent Native Americans from bringing a casino to RI.

Frankie can straighten me out if I'm wrong, but I believe the state constitution as it stands prevents a casino run independently of the state of any kind. RIP John Chaffee... its a shame about Linc

no quotes for Dan?

well thats ok - we can kick it old school

From the projo blog

Pro-casino business group launched

PROVIDENCE -- More than two dozen business people gathered on Federal Hill this morning to announce formation of a group dedicated to drumming up support for the proposed West Warwick casino.

CompeteRI is made up of mostly small businesses ranging from hotels and restaurants to construction firms and auto dealers.

if they support competition, why do they only support the harragansetts and not back trump?

sounds to me like they're being funded in part by the harragansetts.

funny thing after looking at the list of people/companies in the group... almost none of them would benefit in any way from a casino. the only ones that would are the hotels and construction companies and some of the restaurants. other than that, it's mostly small businesses that casino visitors wouldn't patronize. i bet they're just people who want a casino nearby so they don't have to drive to CT.

Why would Rhode Island restaurants and hotels be supportive of a project would presumably include its own in-house hotel and restaurants? I see no ancillary benefit here.

because tehy're not thinking... they're thinking casino customers would venture outside the casino. they don't realize that those who go to foxwoods or mohegan don't leave the casino.

Speaking as someone in the heart of casino land, I can say their footprint and resource sucking is huge and loud.

Do you *really* think a corporation like Harrah's is going to pay their "fair share" in taxes anyway?

A new one (sorry for posting what is essentially Spam but I think the insanity of the situation only becomes clear when you read the whole thing)

October 11, 2006 (Providence, RI) -- Jim Funk, President and CEO of Louisiana Restaurant Association, cancelled plans to come to RI after Dale Venturini, President of the Rhode Island Hospitality and Tourism Association and an outspoken member of SOS, and her board members maliciously strong armed Funk and his board.

Funk was scheduled to appear before 100 restauranteurs today to talk about the positive impact of casinos on business in Louisiana and what Rhode Island stands to gain. (A press event had been scheduled as well.)

"I just want to make it absolutely clear, I was asked by restaurants, both pro and con, to give my perspective on the gaming situation in Louisiana and that was the purpose of my trip. Dale Venturini was strongly opposed to my participation," said Funk, who received last minute calls from his board members to avoid Rhode Island based on pressure from Venturini and her board.

Funk succumbed to the pressure from the SOS group. CompeteRI received a call as late as yesterday (Tuesday) from Funk as he was about to board a plane to Rhode Island.

CompeteRI, a coalition of 500 Rhode Island businesses, have called a press conference for 11:30 a.m. today at Waterplace Restaurant in downtown Providence to "cut" their Rhode Island Hospitality and Tourism Association membership cards, denounce their affiliation with the hospitality group, and demonstrate their outrage of this unaccepted action.

"SOS and their cronies do not care about the facts of this economic development engine for Rhode Island that will create thousands of jobs, property tax relief, and $200M in goods and services to Rhode Island small business community," said Rick Simone, small business owner and CompeteRI spokesperson. "Threatening the livelihood of Jim Funk and his freedom to deliver the facts about industry knowledge to Rhode Islanders is cowardly and malicious."

This casino fight is lame as hell.

I watched Ch 10's news conference on Sunday morning where Narragansett Chief Sachem Thomas went up against former Governor Lincoln Almond concerning the proposed casino. The one point in this whole affair which I think escapeds others is the fact that adjacant to this casino land is another 31 acres of land in which the Narragansestts own, which is now in federal court concerning it's jurisdiction. If the Narragansetts win, they can do whatever they choose to do with this land, including a casino. But Thomas claims this land is for low income housing for his tribe. Yeah, right!

Has anyone noticed that the Harrah's-funded signs in favor of a casino show a silhouette of RI that includes a chunk of SE Massachusetts. What's up with that?

Do you *really* think a corporation like Harrah's is going to pay their "fair share" in taxes anyway?

Might not even be Harrah's. Apparently they might get bought out as Bakst reported in the ProJo.
