Providence already has a reputation in the region for it's strip clubs, and 'spas,' and bathhouses. I say go with that. Regulate it, tax it, but allow it to flourish, no reason to be ashamed. Montreal is a hedonism valve for Puritanical New Englanders, talk about keeping it in RI, it's going to a different country. Providence should be able to stem that flow of greenbacks northward. Create a red light district, and also create other non-adult attractions (after all, Montreal isn't all about the red light areas), and we've got a pretty irresistible attraction here.

People think pretty horrible things about sexually liberal cultures, I think Montreal and Amsterdam, two cities I wouldn't mind seeing Providence emulate.

I would close Lincoln, build a casino in Providence, expand gaming in Newport, create a plan that does not require a constitutional amendment, give the Narragansetts a healthy cut, and give the state an extremely healthy cut.

And codify the legality of brothels with a super high tax rate, and programs to ensure the welfare of sex workers.

I'd be all for a Narragansett brothel as well, but, would they be for it morally?

Brothels are technically already legal in RI, correct? And even if they're not, places like the Megaplex and Balloons practically serve as them anyway.

If we were to ever legalize certain drugs in this country then I'd say lets make Allens Ave into Little Amsterdam, with drug stores, smoke shops, pot bars, brothels, bathhouses and sex shops.

very happy to read that..............

since i'm 20 and feel i can still have fits of immature rage i actually sent the projo a nasty letter full of nasty words asking why they would support and promote a casino that will destroy the city it is supposed to be representing.

everyone please vote no on 1 or the forum wont have any more news to talk about :(

I think you will need some form of constitutional amendment to have a casino in Rhode Island, unless you are envisioning either 1) just a larger version of Lincoln and Newport, i.e. video slots/poker/black jack with no table games or 2) the state running the whole thing.

However, the amendment could be as simple as changing: "All lotteries shall be prohibited in the state except lotteries operated by the state...." to "All lotteries shall be prohibited in the state except lotteries operated licensed by the state..."

I don't get this at all. Who would you prefer operate a casino? Have people had bad experiences at places operated by them (ala Jim and US Air)? I don't patronize casinos and have never been to Vegas, but I was under the impression that they were top of the line in the industry. I do know they have historically done right by their employees.

As to putting it directly in Providence, I think locating the casino here has much more potential than WW to damage existing locally owned businesses. In addition, where in the City are we putting this exaclty? Do you think Providence residents are likely approve it being sited here (which I belive would be a requirement)?
