Virginia Beach business owner wants to promote Laskin Road with a new district called 'The Artery'

The owner of Aloha Snacks is leading an effort to launch a new district called the Artery along 31st/Laskin.

“Wykle envisions The Artery could become a mecca for collaboration, where two or more small local businesses team up for art-inspired events. He suggested Smartmouth Brewery, which has its pilot house on 32nd Street a block from Laskin Road, could host a beer release party with Vinyl Daze Records spinning the music.”

There  was a launch party last night and it seems like he already has a lot of business owners and the city on board with the idea. Hopefully this will encourage some additional movement down there - especially with the former Farm Fresh. Harris Teeter is currently in the process of auctioning off the equipment & clearly has no plans to use the space.

Farm Fresh Auction

Although the landowner’s past comments aren’t encouraging.

“Jeffrey Murden said he has no plans to redevelop his family's property. "They have all these visions," Murden said, showing off a stack of old city plans for the corridor, few of which have been completed. “If it ain't broke, leave it alone."

Laskin Gateway Article (2009)

Hopefully the family recognizes it’s broken now.

Laskin Road Farm Fresh could become a mixed-use development in Virginia Beach

A group which includes the landowner has purchased the lease and is in the process of shopping the site to developers. The article states that they plan to either subdivide the building or completely redevelop the property. There are also plans to develop a 2-story building at 31st/Holly.

I think Something in the Water, along with the success of the ViBe District has VB realizing its future potential. The idea of attracting entertainment outside of the strip is what will help them become even more popular as a tourist destination, esp. for the 25-50 crowd. I think too many people see VB as either a squeaky-clean family-friendly vacation spot, a budget-friendly Miami, or a retiree's paradise. It should be something for everybody of all ages, whether you have children or not.

The conceptual rendering was tonight’s meeting. This was shared on Facebook. The comments indicated that the portion to the left would be reserved for hotel/parking garage development. The plans are very early in the process with the work expected around 2030.

I am really surprised that the Rudee Loop never became a massive all inclusive resort hotel. With that much available land, it seems like a prime spot for something like that.

I could easily see that urbanlife…very good idea. I'm not so sure the city ever tried to market it like that.

A local hockey coach wants to propose a new, 4,000-seat ice hockey venue called the Warrior Ice Center. It would feature two NHL regulation-sized rinks and go next to the Sportsplex.

I grew up playing ice hockey at Iceland, and still play there today. This has been in the works for a little while now and is long overdue. The 4 thousand seats part is fluff and would never work, but this is pretty much guaranteed to happen just a matter of when they finish raising the funds. They are considering two locations for the site, near the sports plex like the article says and also near the convention center. Either site would require some sort of deal with the city.

A preliminary concept plan has been submitted for Pembroke Mall titled "Datitudes Development". No other information has been given. It was submitted by MSA P.C. and the owner is Pembroke associates. the word development makes me think that this is not some run-of-the-mill store, this may in fact be the first and middle for the 15-story buildings that were alluded to in an article earlier this year.

Whatever it is it's going where Jason's Deli currently is. Jason's Deli fronts Virginia Beach boulevard. If they were just repurposing the building, I'm not sure if they would have to go through a preliminary concept plan. Probably a redevelopment of that property.
