The Jacksonville is rather old. The coliseum and baseball grounds near alltel stadium have already been replaced a few years ago.

Id say probably a ~8 year old picture

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Actually, the Jax pic is fairly recent, all things considered. The Coliseum was impoded in summer '03, so we know the picture is at least 1 year, 10 months old.

However, the construction on the new arena (clearly visible in the photo) didn't even start until, i think, mid '02. That would make the Jax photo absolutely no more than 3 years old, and probably newer.

(Also notice the Baseball grounds construction, Adams Mark, Berkman Plaza, St. Joe headquarters, JEA property site clearing, etc. all place the picture at somewhere in '02 or early '03)

Yes, that's a free anchor area next to the marina.

It's a lively sort living on small sailboats for the most part. I'd bet that at least half aren't even sea worthy. Most come to shore in small row boats. It's the ghetto of the sailling world. People that can't afford a slip.

It's also a wonderful part of what makes the Grove so interesting. There's talk of kicking them out though and charging people to anchor.

I dont want to sound snippy but Brickell you are dead wrong. LOl those boats belong to the Coconut grove Sailing club. They are tied to underwater slips. They build these concrete blocks at the bottom of the water and float a buoy, each boat who is allowed for membership gets a buoy. They do a a regatta every year so all those boats are indeed sea worthy. The people they want to get rid of that u were reffering to are the drifters who live on the islands just nearby. The get to those boats via launches form the club.

Here's an article on the Coconut Grove waterfront

Miami dreaming up future of waterfront

Miami's latest planning effort aims to spruce up Coconut Grove's charming and historic but dowdy waterfront.

Sailboats at anchor, clear blue water, a clutch of offshore islands, bookended by green parks: Coconut Grove's waterfront seems at first glance a postcard paradise.

But look closer, and it's all a little bit funky and a little bit scruffy.

A concrete box of a city exposition center, sparingly used, blocks views of the water.

Beyond the islands, derelict boats dot an unregulated anchorage, which the state has ordered cleaned up.

The islands are overrun with exotic trees and largely inaccessible.

''It all needs some TLC,'' said Robert Weinreb, a city consultant.

Now the Grove's waterfront will get all the attention it can handle.

It's the focus of the latest in a series of ambitious planning efforts launched by city officials in the past month.

They have selected a renowned firm, Massachusetts-based Sasaki Associates, to devise a master plan...
