Hard Rock Hotel

Recommended Posts

How does a city get a Hard Rock Hotel? Detroit should try to attract one. Monroe Block, the perfect place. Right where it all happens. I have sent emails to the company to try to hear their opinion, but they never emailed me back. I have sent various emails. I told them about possibly redeveloping Statler Hotel. Thats not happening. Any opinions?

Detroit was going to get a Hard Rock Hotel in the Whitney Building. It fell through. That's ok though...there isn't demand for new hotel rooms downtown anyways.

It's never gonna happen, its one of the least talked about projects, I doubt anything will happen.

Downtown will need more hotel space for the Super Bowl, but after that its downhill. Nice rendering Allan, the renovated top would be nice, it appears similar to the National Bank Building

I'm not a big fan of the top in the Whitney rendering, but it looks better than it does now. Currently the building just stops abruptly. Removing the cornice was a bad idea....

Modernizing it in the 50s was a bad idea. I agree, I'm not a fan of the top but it is better than todays. It looks like the same siding crpa that is at the top of where the National Bank Bldg's cornice was.

The Whitney will probably be converted to residential uses in the future. The building is still in really good condition, so it shouldn't cost that much to rehab. Although the building might sit there ten more years before something happens to it. After all, in Detroit we cannot renovate something that is still in salvageable condition. We like to wait until the buildings deteriorate as much as the Statler before we even consider renovation.

When did news about the Hard Rock Hotel come out for Detroit? When did it fall through?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The news came out in 2000. It fell through after the owners of the building could not secure financing (I'm not sure when that was). The building is owned by the same people who own the Hard Rock Hotel in Chicago.

The biggest thing preventing hotel investment in Downtown Detroit is the cloud of the permenant casinos floating overhead.

It is not smart to invest money in fixing or building a hotel if a large national casino operator is going to open a new hotel in the near future.

It is not for complete lack of demand.

You might quote high vacancy rates, but those are largely for hotels in need of major renovation and the capital to renovate is risky considering the casinos.

I've never heard of this hotel before. Doe it have anything to do with the Hard Rock Cafe as shown in this photo of one here in the Carolinas?

So many people collect stuff from Hard Rock Cafe. The food isn't even all that good, at least for the price you pay! With that said, I did eat at the one in Detroit once just so that I could say that I've been there.

I'm not too impressed by Hard Rock Cafe. They have interesting interiors, but the food is no better than your average TGI Fridays or Applebees. BTW, there's a Hard Rock Hotel in the new casino in Tampa. What's strange is the city doesn't have a Hard Rock Cafe.

Since Tampa doesn't have a HRC, I'm surprised they didn't include one in the hotel.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That is weird. So is there any chance Detroit will ever get a chance to get one?

Yeah, but not for a while.

At least until hotel space is in higher demand. With the BC coming our way, the Casinos, and a few other proposals, it seems a bit risky.

As far as the Whitney, I see residential units more practical. Especially since GCP has become more of a residential area.

It would be nice to look out your hotel window and see a park though. I would still rather have a new building built on Monroe Block for it. Would they move the cafe if the hotel was built at the whitney? If they moved it, Campus Martius Park would take a big hit.

Yes how about they demolish the National Theatre and Cadillac Tower for it?

Tear that schitt down

I don't see why they'd move HRC. If Detroit ever gets a Hard Rock Hotel don't look for it in the Whitney Building. Those plans are dead. The Whitney will probably be converted to residential, with shops on the first four floors.

The first four floors? That would make alot of shops.

The atrium extends up over the lobby for the first floor floors.
