New talk on the news yesterday, of an on campus hotel at UCF.

Located at the intersection of University Blvd and Alafaya Trail near the main entrance to the UCF main campus, The Pegasus Hotel will feature 179 rooms and suites. It will also have more than 10,000 square feet of conference and event space. There will be an active lobby bar, a three meal-a-day restaurant, a take-way pantry, and of course, a swimming pool.

The hotel is joint venture between DEVEN Group, Demetree Global and Pinnacle Hotel Management. The hotel will carry a Tribute by Marriott flag and will be managed by Pinnacle Hotel Management.

More than $600 million in improvements to Orange County Convention Center moving forward

With a more than $600 million price tag, the grand concourse at the convention center will add more ballroom and meeting spaces and entirely enclose the walkway between the north and south concourses.

A multipurpose venue includes 200,000 square feet, free of columns, and able to seat up to 20,000 people.

Interesting. Vegas has more shows and yet is smaller than OCCC or #1 McCormick Place. Supposedly, Vegas' facilities aren't as palatial as ours, either.

So, it begs the question. Are we spending all this extra money just to make sure Harris Rosen doesn't dare to think we'd spend it on something... useful?

Vegas views that as a problem. While we're doing our $600 million expansion, they're doing a $1.4 billion expansion that is to replace a casino hotel they bought to have more space to expand, the Riviera casino. They're adding 600,000 sq ft of convention space under their project, which is going to make it larger then the OCCC when both complete there current phase of expansions and renovations, and move OCCC into third largest. Also Vegas has FAR more convention space outside of the convention center in the surrounding casino resorts.

This is the first I heard about converting the covered walkway to enclosed between the 2 buildings. One thing I noticed attending conventions that spill over from one building to the other is they typically seem to run buses between the two buildings, and when I tried to use those bridges, the moving walkways on them are typically off. I don't know if its just the shows I went to that have had it like that or if its common, but I found that to be strange, and is enclosing the covered walkway going to change that?

Wouldn't it be a wonder if this same political will were directed toward a mass transit link between OCCC/I-Drive and the airport.  I don't mean to say I necessarily oppose the current expansion efforts - but if we're having a conversation about competitiveness, how huge a coup would it be for Orlando to tout a direct rail link to OCCC as a selling point?

No argument from me there. I was real loud about the county/city and especially the airport for rejecting our I-Drive/airport connection train. The Vegas monorail connects to their convention center (but not to the airport, as of yet at least.

Once upon a time, Disney had a transportation division (a spinoff from work on the real EPCOT.) They wanted to do a demonstration project in the area but uberconservative central Florida back then had no real interest.

As it turned out, they did projects with Hawaii and the little train that runs under Congress before deciding it wasn't part of the company's core mission and closing the division.

From what I understand, the plan was to connect the monorail to the airport, but like Orlando, special interests got involved and opposed it. The taxi lobby there killed the plan. ....... not unlike Orlando.

The layout leaves much to be desired. It is a very suburban, self contained layout that can be in anywhere but a TOD. There should not be any parking fronting Orange Ave.  Even so, I wish the city/county would grid the road and required them to be a more urban version of this. Short sighted plan if the county approves this.
