Another bit of evidence that, whatever the reason we missed out on HQ2 is, the idea we're lacking on the tech front probably ain't it (the fact Jeff Bezos is investing so much in a Blue Origin plant in Brevard is another sign.)

Nashville and Indy, to name two, have fewer transit options than Charlotte (which got our Lynx light rail, thanks to Clarence Hoenstine and a few other idiots.)

What IS interesting, however, is the number of state capitals and the two DC suburbs that made the list.

Like a lot of Silicon Valley upstarts, a lot of tech CEOs start out with libertarian leanings and vow to have nothing to do with politics and politicians (which is ironic given the amount of federal dollars that made the Valley and Seattle prosperous in the postwar era.) They rapidly find out that rapid growth runs into all sorts of problems with government. Amazon, of course, has been the latest to discover that and Jeff Bezos is redoing a huge house in DC to grease the skids (it probably also didn't hurt in his decision to buy the Washington Post.) 

Since it's probable Bezos (who took a personal hand in setting up the municipal beauty contest) knew all along who he really wanted, trying to read the tea leaves of who made the cut or didn't is likely a fool's errand.

Well, those two cities have or are in proximity to schools like IU, Purdue, and TOSU.  Does UCF have a "name" like those big schools?  Nope.  UF does, but UF isn't in Orlando.  The UCF product just doesn't garner the respect that it thinks it should have with these large entities, like Amazon- if that was the reason or a major part of why Orlando didn't make the cut.  Let's not forget that UCF having a large number of on-campus dorms and a football stadium is only a decade-old phenomenon.  Those other schools have been in the game for a century; and so have those cities. 

This is the Orlando reality check.  Landing KPM&G was a big deal.  The OCCC is a big deal.  Darden is a big deal.  Martin Lockheed is a big deal.  CRT is a big deal.  Brightline will be a big deal.  The Space Coast and Port Canaveral are big deals.  Disney and Universal are big deals,  but consider this: Amazon is building a fulfillment center in Lake Nona now, or it just opened.  Every other large city in Florida had at least one, or two, or three already located there.  Orlando has a ways to go, but it's on the right track.

That being said, I bet this is gonna be similar to the Olympics courting different cities.  JetBlue did it to Orlando.  Amazon will do it to the city that it says yes to.  It's all about the $$$.  It always is.

Growing up, I often wondered why there was NOT a train of some kind from Orlando to the coast. I don't know what our leaders think sometime. I understand the money part but it seems like a no brainier.  Lynx doesn't even go to Port Canaveral but could probably have an express Bus go out there once an hour. IDK. As time and years go by, it will become inevitable.

Saw this reported on channel 9 yesterday. Plans are in the works to breathe new life into Oveido Mall by turning the old Macy's into a senior living center. Sounds kind of counter intuitive at first, but when you think about it, seniors like to eat at restaurants and they tend to have plenty of disposable income. Could be a good thing. Might this be the avenue Fashion Square ends up taking?

Oviedo Mayor Dominic Persampiere said a developer filed an application to turn the closed Macy’s anchor building into a senior living center.

The pre-application to the city was filed by Tricor U.S. LLC.

"You know, an active senior living center here at the mall could be the boost the mall needs. I mean, seniors can walk in the mall, they can shop in the mall, the food court, the restaurants. Heck, there is even a brewery coming here," Persampiere said.

Tricor would also incorporate retail and office space, restaurants in the parking lot, and a 115-room hotel, which is another first for Oviedo, if it’s approved.

There is also a proposed access ramp from State Road 417, directly to the mall, making the drive easier.

Two additions to the mall are a brewery and a children’s museum called, Arcadia, which will have its grand opening next week.

OMG, that is so weird. I just had a conversation with someone a few days ago about how seniors make good customers.  The new Jimmy Buffet Villages-type of community in DB came up as an example and the expansion of The Villages.  It all makes perfect sense.  All they need now is BINGO.

More, ummm, jobs (didn't someone say we never talk about jobs here?) ramping up on the Space Coast from Blue Origin (that's Jeff Bezos of Amazon fame, who we're told by a recent poster has no use for the region) and One Web.

It also mentions another Lockheed Martin project, Orion. The company has over 100,000 employees worldwide (including lots of STEM types) and over 14000 are in Florida; most of those are in Central Florida (Orlando, Ocala, Brevard).
