The Wayne County-Detroit Community Development Entity Inc. has approved the first two new market tax credit projects from the $27 million allocated from the federal government in 2004. $150 million more could be approved by May 1st.

$5.4 million in credits are going to the Mexicantown Mercado, Plaza and Welcome Center in Detroit, and $2 million are going toward construction of a production plant for 18th Street Deli in Hamtramck.

The 45,000 squarefoot Mercado, Plaza and Welcome Center is expected to bring 195 jobs to Mexicantown.

The 18th Street Deli will build a new 24,000 square foot plant to produce sandwiches and prepared food on the site of the Cook Family Foods property on Joseph Campau in Hamtramck. The city of Hamtramck is assisting the deli with brownfield tax credits.

Also in the works are credits for a shopping center at Seven Mile and Telegraph, as well as a $5 Million piece of the missing funding to complete the Book Cadillac Hotel renovation.
