Agreed.  I hope that some version of this happens.  Cycling or walking from Manchester to the CBD would be a pretty cool commute.

Personally, I love it and hope it happens.

I agree. It's very ambitious, hope it happens but am quite skeptical as to if it will. I hope Richmond continues to focus on the river and enhancing the public park and access there.

'but it fits the entertainment district of Navy Hill if anywhere in Richmond.  I'm not a casino fan - but it seems inevitable with the draw Maryland has pulled.  If you're with the Pamunkey and you see Richmond getting ready to put together a billion dollar entertainment and convention district in the heart of Pamunkey ancesteral land …. your wanting a piece of that.   Not to mention you have multiple interstates converging at that point and a prime location on the PULSE public transportation artery.   It screams "build here".

And no I don't know what it has done to downtown Detroit.

You mean this https://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20170717/news/634061/detroit-casinos-have-paid-45-billion-in-taxes-to-state-city-since

Looks like the  17th Street Farmers' Market is about to re-open.  I hope that this is runaway success and draws new people to the bottom.   Block by block, Richmond is getting better all the time. The skating is a nice touch.

The opening is super lame.

It isn’t even finished.  There are some kiosk things still wrapped in  house wrap.  The public will be unimpressed and won’t leave with any excitement to return.  I had expectations of a holiday market atmosphere and festival lights cross-crossing the market.  Nope.

It may be cool by spring (new places opening, outdoor seating expanded). They should have waited to open.

It is certainly a better public space than what was there.  If there is the dancing water feature thing it may go over well in the warmer months.

I’m glad that the opening night was well attended.  I stopped by last night and the plaza was clean and looks nice but it was empty and uninteresting.

There is quite a bit of renovation going on in the restaurant spaces lining 17th Street.  I think it will be successsful in the warmer months.

As for now, the opening week, it doesn’t even approach what was envisioned (a holiday market like one would find in Germany).  I suspect that things didn’t wrap up in time for all that planning.  I’d rather the city just keep it closed until it is finished (including the restaurants) so that when it was opened to the public it had more of an impact on the public psyche.

Here are some photos from last night (around 6:00pn).

Does anyone know of the grace street pass through under the train shed  is open ?

I looked like it was still fenced off last night but I didn’t get that close.  I’ve been waiting for this to open since spring, was hoping that when the 17th Street farmers market was finished, this would be open and threated  like a part of it.   The shed is completely inaccessible from the market area without it.  Another missed opportunity if it is still fenced off.

Btw, the walkway under the shed (grace Street) is very nice.  It’s crazy to me that the city can wait so long for it to be usable.  It will be full of cobwebs and burned out lightbulbs before the public gains access.

RTD has a development update up.

Love the list of developments in this article. I even saw some renderings I haven’t seen before!

I have to say, I’m concerned about the South Falls Tower...it was supposed to start this past summer and nothing has moved yet.  The city is supposed to reconstruct the bridge before demo can even begin.  Makes me wonder....

These are the renderings I’ve never seen before:
