Richmond Developments

Looks like another new construction project/development of apartments, this time for Section 42ers.

http://www.richmondb...om-with-a-view/

Just when things were starting to look up in Manchester.

The property just north of this proposed development was supposed to have a mid-rise apartment or condo building developed. At least that was plan a year or so ago. Not sure what happened to that project.

A Georgia based company called The Novare Group is constructing an apartment building called Skyhouse in Atlanta (see the February story and photo in the link below.)

I read in UP's Raleigh forum that Novare, in collaboration with other companies, is planning cookie-cutter copies of 23-story, 320 unit Skyhouses in Orlando, Raleigh and possibly Charlotte and Austin.

Such a building, while not a beauty IMO, could be a signature tower at the south end of Lee Bridge. Or, perhaps, it could fill in the old Centennial tower site on East Main Street if a developer partnered with Novare.

Just a thought. :whistling:

If Martin Agency CEO Mike Hughes is successful in selling his idea for an elevated bridge-park across the James River, Richmond will have a real "show-off" feature to greet visitors during the 2015 cycling championships. And the intention is to make it a permanent enhancement for the city.

The proposal is not unlike the famous High Line on Manhattan's West Side between 33rd and 14th Streets. The major difference is that Richmond's bridge would be wider, span water and offer many more diverse activities.

Have you guys read this story about the proposed Bridge Park? I'm amazed there hasn't been any comment.

I can't wait to read a detailed report. :w00t:

A restaurant/bar in Richmond is on the best ten list in the Northeast US but needs your vote (I've already posted this in the Dining Out thread and decided to also place it here also since this is the second most viewed thread.)

So, please search for the Northeast Region and vote for MEKONG Vietnamese Restaurant at 6004 West Broad Street.

Richmond dot com tells you how easy it is to vote:

http://www2.richmond...als-ar-2205837/

Well, Richmond has won another 'best in the nation' award.

MEKONG is voted the best beer bar in the US of A.

That's pretty impressive, IMO. :good:

Even though it's a year old, this Venture Richmond presentation is quite a show!

It's titled THE ART OF URBAN INNOVATION: RVA DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT SNAPSHOTS 2011.

Scroll down through the photos and renderings and I bet a quarter you'll see some places for the first time.

It's a pdf:

Has there been any follow-up on this story?

Wandering around Brown's Island recently, I noted the stone bridge piers just west of the Manchester Bridge connecting the north and south banks of the James.

I suspect the plan is to top off those piers with a "green" pedestrian crossing similar to New York's High Line.

Check them out during the Richmond Folk Festival. (The forecast is for sunny/clear weather this weekend.)

I really hope the "Bridge Park RVA" proposal goes through.... I have indeed been to NYC and visited the High Line (I love architecture, including landscape architecture! ;)) and was very impressed. I believe it is starting construction on it's 2nd phase now, and has been extremely successful. Now with Richmond, they'd be taking a historic old bridge, running across Outside Magazine's favorite river, and connecting two of the most influential districts in the city together (Downtown and Manchester)

The fact that it is inspired by the High Line is really neat. Do want a bridge park!!!

A commentator named Beth has contributed this BBC story about New York's High Line under Nathan Cushing's piece about Richmond's proposed Bridge Park.

I saw Segways zipping along the riverfront several weeks ago and assumed they were out of the Shockoe Slip company which has been in that location for a couple of years.

Now I'm not sure.

River City Segs is operating out of an old firehouse at 1805 East Grace Street in The Bottom. Is it the same company with a new name and location? Or is it a new operation?

The YORKTOWN, a 256-foot mini cruise ship, will tie up this Friday (October 26th) at Richmond's Intermediate Terminal and its passengers will come ashore to tour the cty.

It will return for a second visit on November 1st.

Ships of this size have included Richmond on their itineraries from time to time in the past decade but have not been publicized.

Since the story indicates the city is making improvements at the dock, perhaps Richmond will become a frequent port of call.

Quick question, and maybe it's been answered:

Does anyone know what is being built on the north side of the 4300 block of West Broad Street.

This site was previously the home of C.A.R.R.S.S. LLC, a car customization garage owned by former basketball player Cory Alexander (UVA, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Roanoke Dazzle [NBDL]). Interestingly, there was actually a regulation-sized outdoor basketball court right in the middle of the parking lot. It can be seen in satellite imagery of the property. Cory Alexander originally purchased the lot to eventually sell or lease to a national retailer (Wal-Mart and WaWa were mentioned as possibilities).

He's had some financial problems recently and I can only assume he no longer owns the property.

I noticed a couple (maybe 3) concrete/cinder block building/elevator cores have been constructed with some scaffolding and it appears to be a couple of stories high...

Any idea what this is?

PS: apologies for spelling and grammar. I'm at work and I'm typing fast while doing other tasks.

Edited to add: I stopped by today and the building has 5 cores rising and (judging the the number of openings in the core) is 3 stories tall.

I have been wondering the same. All I can find is that it is now owned by a Contractor Don Barry LLC.

You'll see this site elsewhere on this or another thread, but it's interesting to see again and guess which architectural designs have been fulfilled in Richmond by this shop and which ones have not.

The opening view is of a condo called Gotham in a turn-of-the-20th century commercial building on East Main between 12th and 14th Streets. It is occupied. I think it's one of the coolest penthouse designs in the city.

The Richmond Times Dispatch is running a multi-segmented piece today about the filming of LINCOLN in Richmond.

This one reveals Steven Spielberg's observations.

He speaks highly of the experience and says he'd like to do more movies in the city.

He and his wife, Kate Capshaw, rented a condo in Vistas on The James overlooking the river.

He says Richmond has good restaurants, but the one he frequented was MORTON'S STEAK HOUSE in Shockoe Slip just steps from his apartment. And SINE IRISH PUB (pronounced 'Shee-nay) across the street from MORTON's hosted him and associates on several occasions.

He was a bit surprised when several local folks hired as background actors declined to appear in Northern uniforms. :)
