While other news sources have carried stories about the proposed transformation of Central National Bank, the RTD has been more cautious.

Today, business writer Carol Hazard runs with the story.  It's carried in today's RTD as well as in one of its supplements called Work It Richmond.

I like this picture of the tower. :)

OOP!

I just created a thread regarding this announcement.  I can't beat you guys to anything!  LOL

Welcome Richmonology.  Your new '15+ Story Office Building Planned for Downtown' thread has already attracted 2 pages of comments. :good:

Lest anyone thinks this is the only high-rise activity going on downtown, check out the following:

1.)  The Georgeglass entry on page 172 of this Richmond Development thread.  It was posted by Georgeglass on November 19th at 12:16AM and has a thumbnail sketch of a possible building at the foot of 10th Street on Haxall Canal.

2.)  TBurban's entry on page 39 in the VCU Development thread posted at 4:02PM on September 13th.  It's an excellent rendering of the Children's Hospital now under construction on East Broad between 10th and 11th Streets.

There are other construction projects downtown but these are the only ones which exceed 10 stories.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there another one proposed somewhere over near Broad and Belvedere where a gas station currently sits?  If I'm not mistaken, the developer is supposed to be the same guy who built the new bowling ally off of Hull St. and 288 (name escapes me now).

Right, Eric.  I forgot that one.  The guy's name is Uphof and he had plans to build a 7-story dormitory/apartment building on the site at northwest corner of Grace and Belvidere.  In fact it was to have been called 'The Belvidere' and there is a thread for it in this forum.

When he learned that VCU's Institute for Contemporary Arts dsigned by World renowned architect Steven Holl will rise at southwest corner of Broad and Belvidere, Uphof announced that he has conferred with VCU and Holl and revised his plans for a 10 to 12 story  apartment building on his property which will be compatible with the exciting new ICA (although his gas station will be incorporated into the design.)

The building pictured in your avatar was a proposal for the southeast corner of Belvidere and Broad directly across Belvidere from VCU's ICA and Uppy's tower.

Thanks for helping me clear that one up in my head.  I wish they would resurrect the idea of building the tower in my avatar.  I wonder why it was scrapped?

Hi everyone. My first post. Very glad to have found this forum I have a big interest in the growth and success of RVA.

My big question that drove me to stop lurking and register to post has to do with the Interbake building. Doing searches here, richbizsense, and google in general reveal that the last news was that the work was expected to begin last fall. When I visit The Rebkee website, it doesn't even list it as a project. What is going on?

This development will do wonders for an eyesoar of a corner. Not to mention it is a major gateway. For Fan residents such as myself I would love to not get fustrated at the mess that is broad and boulevard every time I drive through or visit the childrens museum or Gus's.

Anyway, does anyone know what is going on? Has Rebkee changed their plans?

Thanks

Welcome meegwell.

News of Interbake's ressurection into residential status has been quiet lately.

Contributors Wrldcoupe4, who is in real estate, and 540-804 might have some answers.

Meanwhile, the Boulevard corridor improves day to day with the addition of FAT DRAGON restaurant; the new art cinemas called CRITERION on the Movieland lot; the upcoming Mexican restaurant called EN SU BOCA, and the training facility for the Washington Red Skins on Leigh Street behind The Science Museum of Virginia.

More apartments are on the way along the Manchester Canal and the Flood Wall on the south side of the James River -- that is, if I interpret this story correctly.

Tom Papa, principal at Fountainhead Properties, says that the apartment market is still hot in downtown Richmond -- in fact, he says properties his firm controls are 95% leased.

New Fountainhead projects will add 286 new units in two old building complexes in Manchester.

Isn't Fountainhead also involved in the nearly completed renovation of Reynolds North along the Haxall Canal, and isn't there a building between 12th and Virginia Streets that is slated for demolition and new construction of apartments as part of The Locks?

Thanks Burt.  I have witnessed the stretch improve over the years and throw in the the bowtie and childrens museum and you've got a lot of progress.  Problem is that interbake building is a well established camp for junkies and homeless. I frequent the area for a variety of reasons.  It only takes one time for your 5 year old daughter to ask what that man is doing (man is urinating on the interbake fence near McDonalds/Museum) to be h#ll bent on hoping for improvement.  Its such a huge property that is easilly accessible (see recent Flickr photoshoot of the place - inside/outside/rooftop and throughout) it really creates a bad experience all around the area no matter which one of the great improvements you're trying to enjoy.

But enough of that, I was real happy to hear someone was going to redevelop it and I guess its just a waiting game now.

In the same area is an old Bills BBQ (next to Hardees, not by the Diamond).  I always eyed that as a great place for a classic Drive Inn diner.  The property and awening seems like it once was a drive-inn place.  That would be a nice project.  The taco joint replacing the porn joint is huge also.  What about that used car lot down by bowtie, I'd love to see that go. I dont understand how they stay in business.   Im sure there is a need for the handicap and adult diaper store but they could do a better job of making their business a bit more pleasant looking.

I could go on forever on this stuff, and I havent even left the stretch of boulevard south of the train yard!  (like that gas station by the bridge!!!!!)

Maybe that design (somewhere in this thread) released during Tim Kaine's Governorship for a new state office building on the Broad Street lot between 8th and 9th will become a reality sooner than later.

An annual real estate market review of the Richmond area drew about 300 people to the Jefferson Hotel yesterday.

Burried in the story is speculation that the high rise 700 Building at the northeast corner of 7th and Main Streets may be converted to a hotel or apartments.

There is no information about the long discussed 700 Center at northeast corner of 7th and Franklin, nor is the proposed McGuire Woods tower mentioned.

With 3600 Centre becoming apartments, that little corner of Scotts Addition will be getting a nice population boost pretty soon.

I bet we see a few eateries soon after.

New downtown hotel?

Shamin Hotels is under contract to purchase the 18 story 700 E. Main building (NE corner of 7th and Main). By my count, it currently has 1 floor of retail, 4 floors of parking and 11 floors of class C office space (so obviously I'm mis-counting somewhere - maybe due to elevation, it's 2 floors of retail and adding in a mechanical floor gets us to 18).

Quick question, and maybe it's been answered:

Does anyone know what is being built on the north side of the 4300 block of West Broad Street.

This site was previously the home of C.A.R.R.S.S. LLC, a car customization garage owned by former basketball player Cory Alexander (UVA, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Roanoke Dazzle [NBDL]). Interestingly, there was actually a regulation-sized outdoor basketball court right in the middle of the parking lot. It can be seen in satellite imagery of the property. Cory Alexander originally purchased the lot to eventually sell or lease to a national retailer (Wal-Mart and WaWa were mentioned as possibilities).

He's had some financial problems recently and I can only assume he no longer owns the property.

I noticed a couple (maybe 3) concrete/cinder block building/elevator cores have been constructed with some scaffolding and it appears to be a couple of stories high...

Any idea what this is?

PS: apologies for spelling and grammar. I'm at work and I'm typing fast while doing other tasks.

Edited to add: I stopped by today and the building has 5 cores rising and (judging the the number of openings in the core) is 3 stories tall.

I have been wondering the same. All I can find is that it is now owned by a Contractor Don Barry LLC.

Mailing Address: 2900 Sabre St. #75, Viginia Beach, VA 23452

Physical Address: 500 Central Dr. Suite 106, Virginia Beach, VA 23454

Back in November when Icetera posted this information about the owner of the building/land at 4300 W. Broad Street, I did a Google search of the addresses and among the tenants listed for the addresses was an owner/operator of mini storage facilities. I feared that we might get stuck with a hideous storage facility right on West Broad Street.

It looks like my worst fears for this property have been confirmed.

The large 3 story building at 4300 W. Broad Street will be a Mini Price Storage.  That's such a dissapointing use for the nearly 3 acre plot of land right on Broad Street.

That was my fear as well based on the contractor's history and the interior framing.  It could be worse I suppose...

The Richmond Showplace on Mechanicsville Turnpike (just north of I-64) is closing and will reopen as a Roses Department Store in August. Roses is owned by Variety Wholesalers who also owns Super Dollar.

It's not bad looking a building. I drove by today, still wondering what it was... sorry I missed the answer here previously. It's better than a vacant lot.
