Richmond Developments

Cotuit

It looks like we've got our hopes up for a good reason, the above story is promising!

On a smaller note, a construction fence is also at the old Richmond Glass Co. Building at Laurel and Broad.  I can't seem to find the article, but if my memory serves me correctly, VCU plans to turn the building into a dance studio.

Any idea what's going on at Semms and 11th? There is a construction fence around the entire block and one heavy equipment...

I'm curious about this also.  But I think it's actually Semmes and 12th.  I heard it was an apartment complex but not sure this is accurate.

Do you all think it could be the talked about belle summit apartments complex? Here is the story of it from richmondbizsense http://www.richmondbizsense.com/2013/04/10/southside-apartments-set-to-break-ground/

Belle Summit will be where Riverside Dr. interchanges with Cowardin Ave. at the Lee Bridge (southwest corner).  This fencing is two blocks Southwest (1200 SEMMES AVE Richmond, VA 23224-2160) of the UPS (Overnight Freight) complex around where Manchester Place, LLC has developed several infill projects.  The property is currently zoned "B-6 - Business (Mixed Use)" and owned by 1200 SEMMES LLC which may be a shell company of Urban Development Associates, LLC (which developed many of the nearby Fountainhead and Monroe managed developments).

Edit:

Urban Development Associates, LLC's master plan for the area shows low density mixed use development fronting Semmes and condominiums fronting W. 12th St. (at McDonough St.) on that parcel.

Awesome. It is great to see this street fill in!

I agree but I was hoping it would be developed into a small shopping center that would include an eatery or two.  It's great to see all the new residential developments in this area of Manchester but there also needs a new mix of new commerical.  I work in that area and it would be nice to be able to have the choice to walk to lunch, etc;  and it would add to the neighborhood vibe.

More news on the Manchester renaissance:

BizSense reports another lot is being developed for more apartments, but this certain development also is dog-friendly: a dog walk area will be built on the roof of the complex.

I didn't know that Manchester is considered part of downtown Richmond.

I have noticed references before.  Apparently, whoever wrote the Downtown Richmond Wiki has also:

"The Manchester district also is now converting former factories into huge apartment and loft complexes, and now markets itself as a part of Downtown." -

I didn't know that Manchester is considered part of downtown Richmond.

When I was growing up my grand parents and other adults would refer to it as 'Old Manchester' and considered it as an area/neighborhood of Richmond.

However, Manchester originally was an independent town in the mid-late 18th century; then an independent, major-port, city in the mid-late 19th century, but would eventually consolidate with Richmond in 1910 upon two conditions: 1) a free bridge across the river was to be built and 2) Manchester would maintain a separate courthouse than Richmond (which still stands today).
