Looks like plans for a (much-needed) complete overhaul of Kanawha Plaza is in the works:

Good. I don't like that parking lot in the site plan, though.

Agree about the surface lot.  Perhaps turn the proposed parking area into a hard landscape which can be used as a staging /delivery area when the stage needs to be in use.  Maybe the intention of the surface lot is for such use when warranted?  If so, asphalt should not be used and the peripheral of this lot should have shrubbery and / or trees to conceal this space.

Anyone know when construction is supposed to start on these apartments? http://www.richmondbizsense.com/2014/02/11/downtown-apartment-building-approved/

I like the rendering on this site (http://www.senseidevelopment.com/under-development/

Isn't this the one already built on Grace Street (it looks just like it)?  If not, I'm not sure I've heard of this project.  Perhaps someone else on this board can shine some light?

I don't know why, but both links went to the same site. One of the links is supposed to be this:http://www.richmondbizsense.com/2014/02/11/downtown-apartment-building-approved/

Yeah, I've been wondering the same thing about this project!  I've never heard that it has started yet, but I thought the project was to begin shortly after it was approved (a long time ago).  Not sure what the deal is with this project or why I haven't heard anything about it lately.

Looks like it is still under review:

The project is highlighted in the Venture Richmond 2014 development update on page 9 of the following link: http://www.venturerichmond.com/pdfs/transformation.pdf ; it was originally slated for 2015 completion, but that would appear unlikely now. I recall reading about some of the area businesses loudly protesting the 93-unit complex would only have 94 parking spaces available.

Some more details on the overhaul (below the turf discussions):

Apartments proposed for Fulton Hill. http://chpn.net/news/2015/02/12/200-apartments-proposed-for-fulton_40390/

Cadeho

I hope they reopen the cobblestone street and keep it cobblestone too!

I would love to see that reconnected and hopefully the cobblestone would discourage a lot of traffic to keep the neighborhood happy.

This land has a lot of potential! What do you guys think would suit this land best?

http://www.richmondbizsense.com/2015/02/26/with-8m-tag-manchester-lot-hits-the-market/

Mixed use high rises.  Increasing the population and density of Manchester will only help Richmond.  Something like "Skyhouse" or "Viewpoint" in Midtown Atlanta would be great.  A Kroger level grocery store with a high rise above at the corner of Semmes and Cowardin would be ideal.

This will compliment Reynolds South nicely. Hopefully adding more high rises to the southside of the river. I definitely agree they need some retail and a grocery store.  With a grocery store there would be even more of a pull for residents into that neighborhood.

Saw that they are opening an Aldi off Boulevard (http://www.richmond.com/business/local/article_d444d692-bd4d-11e4-8525-a704dec7ae67.html).  Too bad they aren't opening one in Manchester.

Love the way you're thinking here! Richmond needs some serious highrises! It gave me hope to read in the RTD this morning that people are calling and asking about Richmond - people/hopefully businesses want to come here...downtown! Then there's this development today! In this article it says that there is some interest, but they'd better do it right (meaning a REAL mixed use project). Grocery on lower 2 floors, a hotel on the next few floors, office space for the next 10 floors, and condo/apartments on the next 10-12 floors...something like that! If you're going to build something tall, make a statement for Pete's sake!

The article's title isn't all that great, but this quote is the one that I'm referring to:

“We’re getting the calls because people are reading about us,” Ferrara said. “They know that the city is open for business. And projects like Stone, while it’s been complicated and required a lot of work on the part of a lot of folks in this room, it’s definitely reaping benefits in terms of raising the awareness level of the city of Richmond on a national scale.”

I agree that high rises would be nice, but lately I have wondered if a very immense skyline of 300-400 foot buildings would be just as nice/or better. Vancouver is an example of a skyline which is composed entirely of buildings of similar heights to our highest, but it has a tremendous amount of them. Overall, their skyline looks immense and impressive: http://tinyurl.com/py5lg6c. Take Vancouver as a model vs. a city like Oklahoma City which has a sea of mid rises and one inappropriately tall building, and I would pick Vancouver's model for RVA!
