If that building is that Second Empire building underneath, they really need to take that ugly siding off!

Another Cam non sequitur!

If you are referring to the brown & tan structure, it is not covering anything underneath since it was built from the ground up within the last 30 years or so.

I thought it was that nice building seen in those trolley pics covered much like they covered the Thalhimers buildings. If it was built 30 years ago, replace it with what was there before!

Yea, the old tobacco shop did look neat on that corner. There was another that looked just like it at 9th and Main, if I recall correctly.

The n/w corner of 6th and Broad had a zipper news electric sign like the one in Times Square wrapping around the second floor of the building that used to be there.

Thank God! Get those vines (is that kudzu?) off Libby Hill Park and repair the steps that used to be Warehouse St! The back side of the park along 31st St need enhancing too! Chimborazo is a wreck in the valley and perhaps the old connection with Fulton St should be reconnected with Fulton Bottom. Jefferson Hill Park needs a lot of repairs to its lower terraces and Taylors Hill Park needs more recognition, better care, and new stairs. Then there are those lands in the city owned by the parks that are nothing... like in Montrose Heights.

Restoring Grandeur to City Parks

J.R. Pope seems like a fantastic director for the parks. Through Wilder's City of the Future Plan, nearly $20 million more will be contributed to restoring and enhancing city parks.

Maybe this will divert the anti tax mavens from RCS for a while. :)

It's very good news, IMO. And by the way, I was impressed at the well-maintained condition of the grounds around all three lakes in Byrd Park during my recent visit.

Cam, you really should find some way to ally yourself with groups, foundations or the city and get on the payroll of one or the other. Your knowledge is so extensive and valuable that it could be a career move that would benefit every citizen.

Can't wait to see your map as referenced in the off-topic thread.

Not sure if it looks like this already, but here's a rendering of the DoubleTree Hotel conversion along Franklin:

WIL_RADI-exter-1.jpg

Yes, Tommy. The Doubletree does look exactly like this rendering. The lobby is quite attractive. But you'd be hard pressed to find the Doubletree name out front; it's there, but you have to look for it.

I forgot to ask when I popped in if there is still a swimming pool on the roof.

Some of the stories you find in the RTD are really interesting, and in this case, inspiring. It's all about saving properties in Union Hill and on November 1st, you can see all about it on The Learning Chanel:

here are a few interesting items about goings-on in and around downtown in today's RTD business section.

There appears to be renovation activity on the 16th, 19th and 20th floors of BOA at 1111 East main Street.

Monroe Park Associates is planning an eat-in restaurant in the high rise apartment building at n/e corner of Franklin and Belvidere and $66,257 is being invested in renovation of the space.

And this enigmatic item: Childsavers LLC, owner; Conquest Moncure & Dunn, Inc. contractor; 200 North 22nd Street; interio renovation, wheelchair ramps, $1.03 million. Could this be the old Monte Maria convent on Grace?

Also, Eck Enterprises is gutting 9 South Harvie Street and constructing one commercial space and ten residential units in the former 95,000 s/f FlagCenter (which is relocating to Chesterfield.)

Hunt Investments has almost finished Ironhouse Place at 1333 West Broad, between Harrison and Lombardy Street. The former one-story gym has had 4 floors added and includes 56 condo units and two ground level restaurant spaces. Units (17 of which have been sold) are priced between $180,000 and $281,500. Completion is expected in November or December of this year.

This is the block on the south side of Broad that also contains The Coliseum apartments; and across the street at the n/e corner of Broad and Lombardy, activity moves apace on conversion of the former Firestone building to residential.

Also, it is interesting to note that VCU has leased several thousand square feet at 3600 West Broad. That's the building where Mr. Black wanted to relocate the Richmond School Board which currently has offices on top floors of City Hall.

I can't tell if this is a photo or a rendering, but it looks great:

rtcenter_1.jpg

It'a a picture. The curved section to the right is called "The Boomerang" and the building has gotten some nice architectural reviews.

For those out-of-towners who may not know what we're talking about, this is the brand new Phillip Morris Research Center in downtown Richmond in the blocks bounded by 5th/7th/Jackson and Leigh Streets.
