Okay, I've given this a lot of thought and I come back to this one thing. I'd like to take all that Oklahoma firepower and direct it at that Dick Brooks Mitsubishi sign at I-385 and Roper Mtn. Rd that has multi-colored laser-lights boring into my corneas late at night as though I'm looking into the Sun during an eclipse. And if some stray rounds caught the "brighter-than-daytime" parking lot lights, I wouldn't mind it a bit. It wasn't so long ago that the Roper Mtn. Science Center was seeking to create a low light pollution zone around the mountain...and Dick Brooks comes in and triples the Upstate's light pollution output just 1/4 mile away. It's bad enough that one of the largest telescopes east of the Mississippi is barely able to pick up the Big Dipper anymore with so much light in the nightime sky. But when I'm bearing down an Interstate at 70 mph (sorry, it's the Andre Bauer in me), it's really no fun to have to throw up both forearms to shade my eyes from the video death ray that Dick Brooks has sent to wreak havoc on our humble 'burg. I mean, honestly! It's like an alien enemy landed here and left a high-tech weapon in our midst, so someone ought to play the superhero and blow the sucker to high heaven.

LOL this is great!!

While we're at it, let's go Oklahoma on Kia of Greer. I have to turn the volume on my television WAY DOWN when their commercials come on, because the guy just has to yell at you at the top of his lungs the ENTIRE commercial! What is up with that?!?

Perhaps the Dick Brooks sign could be replaced with one of those nice European-style hanging shingles?

OK...it was worth a try to tie up the topic...but I see it will likely fail.

The thing is that I stand by my post. I think Greenville is much improved by destroying this one little, highly obnoxious sign at a prominent gateway to the city. Most of the other suggestions are "tear this down and put something up in its place." My suggestion shows how less is more. Get rid of this bad boy and it transforms the impression of first-time visitors coming in to town from GSP or anyone who uses I-385 for their first trip into town. No need for a shingle. No need to tie up the topic. Just a little bit of C-4, Semtex or Primasheet and, bada-bam, bada-BOOM! gateway enhanced! As for what to do about Platinum Plus....well, that's going to take something else altogether....

Anyway, my suggestion was legit and as much in the spirit of this thread as any other, like it or not.

This may a little bit away from the current trend on this log, but I would propose destroying the building behind the federal courthouse. I don't have a picture right now, but this is the old brick building that is cut off by the Church Street bridge and has a huge Carolina First billboard on top.

It is an abandoned building and an eyesore on one of the main thoroughfares. It coulld be torn down and land scaped for office space underneath the bridge ala Northhampton Wines

Well if you want to get rid of certain commercials, how about the one with the blond girl for Rug & Home that runs around slapping Persian Rugs and screeching at the top of her lungs. Does she ever stop for a breath? :)

Seriously though and on topic, I think the piece of land with the mulch business on the northeast side of the 85/385 interchange should be redeveloped. It's in front of an office park and at the major interchange of the city. It's a prime spot for something much better than a mulch yard.

I have always thought the same thing upstategeek that building could be destroyed and it would make that area look nicer. I think we may get our wish withMcbee starting basicly across the street and the drainage upgrades that are going to be made along the street.

NO! Don't get rid of her. Everybody I know LOVES those commercials.

I don't feel the same resentment about this sign as others obviously do. I like how it adds life to an otherwise typical auto sales lot. I would actually prefer to see more video similar to the action broadcasted on the sign next to FOX Carolina along I-85. Very catchy. :shades:

There used to be an advertisement for a proposal to renovate/construct an attractive building on that same spot. Haven't heard anything in quite a few years though.

I would destroy any and all of the ubiquitous Carol Pyfrom billboards. I do not need to see her 15-foot head everywhere I look. I swear, the egos of some of these realtors...

But seriously...the old Welcome store location at the corner of Haywood and Laurens. The location is deserving of stores FAR better than what's there right now. There's plenty of room for a Greenridge-type development.

I love Michael's art and craft store, but agree that newer buildings would fit that property much better. Seems like too much parking lot for the stores, now that the tire store and others are gone. Things sure have changed since Welcome first opened up there over ten years ago. :)

I don't know if this would go in this thread or the corridor improvements thread. And it is not really tearing anything down, but I would really like to see all of those massive junk yards along 123 and whitehorse road cleaned up! They could do anything with the land, just clean them up! They make a HORRIBLE impression when driving by.

You mean she is talking in the commercial? I had not noticed!

Kidding aside, I agree with your assessment gsupstate. She is a bit much with her unbeatable combination of loudness, screeching, and auctioneer speed. :P

Fortunately, she tames it down a bit for those McKinney commercials.

As for redevelopment of properties (some requiring destruction of previous structures, some not), I still stand by my previous suggestions in this thread. It's nice to see that some of them are starting to take shape. Here's looking forward to a completely updated Poinsett Highway some day. If we could do with Poinsett Highway here even half of what Orlando/Orange County, FL did with Orange Blossom Trail, it'd be great!

I agree totally, I have unfortunately noticed that building many times as well. I actually saw three people on the roof of that building today. they did not look particularly official, but the were using a lot of arm motions and pointing. Perhaps someone is discussing plans...

This may be the wrong thread, but is she the voice "talent" on the Drive's radio spots? "Hey batter...no wood...no wood!"

Imagine her screaming that you have "no wood" in front of 5,000 people. I don't know about you, but I'd have a tough time getting around those bases if she did that. Ouch.

(Oh, FWIW, Tim McKinney told me that Jamie Simpson is single and about as nice as you can imagine. She's a hair stylist living in Atlanta but grew up around here...Anderson or Belton, I believe.)

To keep this on-topic, in the loosest sense of that term, I would NOT destroy Ms. Simpson -- but her screeching voice could use some guidance.
