Portsmouth development

Why exactly should the city of Norfolk and it’s taxpayers be burdened by the poor management of Portsmouth. It is not our mess to clean up.

Because cancer can spread.  Norfolk and Portsmouth have a very long history and merging them into one makes sense. Norfolk is temporarily burdened for the long term health of the entire region.  One city owning the entire harbor would be good thing. Less mouths to feed for the state when they divvy up state money would be a good thing. Meaning that Norfolk would probably get a lot more money especially for taking on a charity case like absorbing a political black eye on the state. Everyone say they want regionalism but no one wants to take that first leap to do it.  All of the cities working together as one is not going to happen unless they are forced to. Obviously they are going to look out for themselves first and a lot of times that devolves into undercutting and competition.  Norfolk needed help from the other cities to help build a new arena downtown for a pro sports team that was pretty much a guarantee but Virginia Beach didn't see it benefiting them enough and pulled their money out and everything fell apart. Virginia Beach refused to let a service road to the new outlets to be built on their land because it benefitted someone else. And so on and so forth to the end of time.  Regionalism, real regionalism will never happen as long as there are seven individual cities pushing only themselves forward while pushing the other back. Sorry rant over.

Both good arguments, and I’m not against the idea, as long as it doesn’t bring down Norfolk, which is trying to make it to the next level.

And that sticking point on the Rhinos will forever remain in my craw, along with VB voting down light rail twice.

Hmm... I wonder what they could possibly put at the waterfront that could draw private development? I seem to remember something major in the works at one time, but I’m drawing a blank....

Sigh.... Someone wake me up when Portsmouth decides to get their act together.  A year later and both the casino developer and Armada Hoffler have now pulled out.  Zero progress... None. We are now exactly where we were a year ago. I give up...

The city of Portsmouth is a beautiful city. If it's government can get it's act together they can really start going places. So many missed opportunities.

Honestly the best thing that could happen would be for it to merge with Norfolk...it won't happen but it would the best thing for portsmouth

Portsmouth has reached a deal with Rush Street Gaming to build an entertainment district and a possible casino. The City Council and Economic Development Authority are scheduled to vote this morning on whether to approve the agreement;

Edit-- the vote passed.

PTown is bringing back Portside to hold concerts near the north ferry landing. It'll be a 45 by 40 tent that they paid $9.5k for. It was slated to be installed this week but that was delayed by the outbreak.

Yeah, let's just ugly up our prime waterfront right across from Norfolk with more ships instead of high end and high-rise development. I give up.

This appears to be great use of this vacant property. Plenty of vacant property around it just ripe with opportunity.

This is typical VB behavior smh, the infighting of HR spill over into State politics that really p*sses me off. The fact that VB has so much to say about what is happening in Portsmouth is very concerning. A VB council-person wanted to stop Portsmouth Casino. It's things like this that make me believe politicians elected in those areas would actively handicap Portsmouth and Norfolk for what?? How did Republican politicians from HR vote on Portsmouth/Norfolk tolls, actively handicapping the core?? Handicapping HR as a whole.

These are also the people who run companies like HRT, so it's also not surprising to see why things continue to fail for HR.

This guy is a delegate but was never on council as far as I know. He was an attorney at the time that he tried to take Lucas down but it is very important to note that his actions were personal, and in no way done at the behest or in concert with VB City Council. None of the council members currently serving, or serving at that time, were involved in that issue. There's a lot of bad blood between him and Lucas, and his actions should be viewed as him settling scores in a personal feud, and not VB trying to insert itself into Portsmouth politics.

Portsmouth will honor hip-hop native Missy Elliott with a street named after the 4-time Grammy winner

The stretch of McLean Street by the casino will be renamed Missy Elliot Boulevard. Interestingly, there is already an Elliot Avenue over there.

This block was also in the news recently after Economic Development sold a site to the Miller Group for 4.5% of its assessed value. EDAs have been missing the mark on land values lately. Portsmouth sold a property for $3M below its assessed value. Then the city slashed the assessment in half.

Mixed-use development called the "Innovation District" planned for High Street, on the other side of Effingham. In other words, outside of Olde Towne. This has some serious potential to revitalize Portsmouth.

Two planned developments, linked by their access to High Street in Portsmouth, could bring as many as 282 new apartments to the city, including 50 affordable units.

Virginia Beach developer Ripley Heatwole Co. wants to build 232 apartments on land it owns in the Churchland neighborhood. The project would redevelop the former Kroger supermarket at 5601 High St., which closed in 2015, into 192 units. The redevelopment would also create a pool and clubhouse and modernize an existing 10,356-square-foot building for commercial use.

The second site, adjacent to the Kroger location at 3109 Tyre Neck Road, would be turned into an additional 40 apartments.

The apartments would be located in four four-story buildings.

A few miles down the road at 1100 High St., an Ohio developer is planning to build 50 affordable housing apartments.
