C. Allegiant Meeting Update:

Mr. Edwards stated that GSP is the 6th lowest cost airport for Allegiant to operate out of. Allegiant is still very pleased with GSP and should be adding additional service in the Orlando/Sanford market in the future. Staff is still talking to Allegiant about Las Vegas and International service.

In June, Staff will attend the Jumpstart Air Service Meeting. This meeting will include all of the incumbent carriers and others.

In the take it for what it's worth rumor mill department, the airport is still trying really hard to get United Express to add a nonstop from Denver.  I've been told that when Southwest does a 1 stop to Denver via Midway there is a high thru passenger rate from GSP.

There has also been talk from American about bringing back ORD service with the new EMB 175's.  Republic Airlines would fly them under the Eagle brand.   Speaking of Eagle, the airline itself will soon have a new name.  The brand American Eagle will still stay on the planes.  The name change is to not confuse people with who is flying the plane now that Eagle is outsourcing a lot of their flights.

American has also had talks about bringing in bigger planes for their DFW routes, but their gate (A5) is too tight a spot for Super 80's.  The largest plane it can hold is an Airbus 319.  American begins to receive those planes in July.  Right now most flights to and from DFW are running between 90-100% capacity.

Yes, Southwest flights through MDW run at high load factors, as do the flights to BWI and HOU. I don't understand why BNA is doing poorly, as it opens the west for GSP passengers. Not sure since the CO / UA merger, why UA would need flights to DEN, as they have three or four daily to IAH for points west.

American, I can see adding ORD back, but with the AA / US merger, PHL will probably go. I hear Philly and Phoenix will be the sacrificial lambs in this merger, the way CVG and MEM were in the DL / NW merger ( though GSP kept one daily CVG flight for some strange reason).

If you look at GSP's daily seat capacity on all airlines, a fair amount is going unused.

Thanks. Didn't realize that. Not a UA flyer. So they cut some after the CO merger.

I know IAH has seen cut backs by UA....most say it is in retaliation for Houston spending to add capacity / international services at HOU and benefit SW, in UA's own back yard.

Yeah it is down from last year.  UA definitely threw a tantrum after SW's Hobby expansion.  That of course was a direct result of how Houston was treated by United after the merger by keeping the new United (moving Continental) in Chicago and making immediate cuts at IAH.

Southwest Airlines has cut two of its seven daily nonstop departures from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, an airline official said today.

The airline has eliminated nonstop service to Orlando and dropped one of two daily nonstop flights to Baltimore/Washington, a Southwest spokeswoman told GreenvilleOnline.com.

Southwest still operates daily nonstops to and from GSP at Chicago Midway, Nashville and Houston, according to the airline’s new flight schedule this month.

The airline dropped the nonstops to Orlando and BWI earlier this year and didn’t reinstate them in the new schedule, the airline spokeswoman said.

Southwest came to Greenville-Spartanburg in 2011 in a much heralded airline announcement.

The Southwest spokeswoman said passenger volume to Orlando didn’t warrant continuing a nonstop flight, but airline officials are pleased with the volumes to the other cities.

I was told by some Southwest employees after the announcement that MCO service was dropping that they were cutting down to 5 flights a day this summer but by the end of the year they expect to be up to 9.  They weren't told of any new routes though.  With today's announcement looks like what they said is still holding true.

Seems United is going to be dropping the daily GSP to Cleveland nonstop. Watch for it.....

While that's certainly a possibility sometime down the road, United just started a new flight schedule yesterday (June 6th) that lasts until Labor Day and the Cle flight is still there.  So it'll be with us at least through the summer.  Cle is basically a PM feeder for Ord and Ewr traffic and is helpful rerouting passengers from the constant delays/ground holds of the 2 bigger hubs.

There's been some speculation that the drop down to 5 flights is to make GSP eligible for outsourcing for SW's ground operations, if SW decides to go that direction.  There have been rumblings that SW might start outsourcing ground operations at some of their smaller stations and as of now is the only mainline airline that operates its own ground service out of GSP.  It is one of only 2 mainline airlines (along with Delta) that doesn't outsource it's ticket counters either.

Basically this would be a cost cutting measure for SW b/c many of their rampers are tenured employees with higher wages and outsourcing would be much much cheaper.  Once they were able to outsource they would bump back up a couple flights.  Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

SWA routes through early next year were posted today. Do you feel lucky? Well, do you?

I spoke with some guys after the announcement to drop to 5 and they actually said they've been told routes will expand around Valentines day.

Ahhh...gotcha. The new schedule has flights only out through February 12th so hopefully the next release will have a GSP expansion.

As part of Wingspan, Thomas Creek and Green Leaf's have agreed to locate within the airport. Thomas Creek will be a full sit down restaurant with local flare while Green Leaf's will be a healthy "on the go" option. These two establishments will be located in the Grand Hall and are in addition to the future Chick-Fil-A, Dunkin Donuts, and Hudson News.

Thought this was old news.

Two restaurants are committed to GSP. The Thomas Creek Grill concept will be located on the concourse and Greenleaf Grille, promoting healthy menu items such as grilled sandwiches, salads and wraps, will serve a menu of items. Dunkin-Donuts will also locate a franchise.

Chick-fil-A and GSP has reached an agreement that becomes effective once GSP reaches the 1.1-million passenger plateau.

MSE Branded Foods (food and beverage) and the Hudson Group (retail), two companies already engaged with concessions at GSP, were awarded contracts for their respective services. The Hudson Group/Branded Works were approved for the coffee and snack concession.
