Dallas is bigger but I'm not so sure that it beats Atlanta in the corporate world.

Atlanta is the location for the headquarters of Delta, UPS, Georgia Pacific, Bellsouth, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, The Southern Company and six other fortune 500 companies. In fact Atlanta is the home of more fortune 500 companies than any other city in America with the exception of New York (with 40) and Houston (with 18).

In addition to all that there is a big TV presence here. There's CNN and all the Turner owned networks like Cartoon Network, TNN, TNT, Turner South and TCM.

But Dallas is still the larger television and radio market. The DFW metro is home to American Airlines, Southwest, Frito Lays, Texas Instruments, 7-11, Blockbuster, Centex Corp, Exxon and a few more. It can hold its on in the corporate level. There will be more moving there in a couple years from California and Germany.

This is the Dallas plans for expansion of the Dart.

Dallas by itself is no bigger than (or at least it seems to me) Atlanta. Now when Ft. Worth is added into the equation then yes, the metro gets bigger. Dallas is a little more organized and gridded (easier to get around in) than Atlanta. Atlanta is more progressive though and has more of a liberal feel to it.

If we're talking about metro areas and number of Fortune 500 companies, then Dallas does beat Atlanta in the corporate world. I've never been to Dallas, but it sure is an interesting place with decent rail options, when viewed from Google Earth. In addition to the commuter rail line, connecting downtown Fort Worth and the red & blue light rail lines, it also has a streetcar system as well.

If we're talking about metro areas and number of Fortune 500 companies, then Dallas does beat Atlanta in the corporate world.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I looked at the 2004 F-500 list and counted up all the companies for each metro. I came out with 14 in the Dallas Metro and 14 in the Atlanta Metro.

Dallas-

Exxon-Mobil 213.199 (2nd)

Texas U Corp. 11.325 (177th)

Texas Instruments 9.834 (197th)

SouthWest Airlines 5.937 (310th)

Affiliated Computer Services 3.7872 (445th)

Brinker International 3.285 (492nd)

Forth Worth-

AMR Corp. 17.44 (110th)

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. 9.413 (210th)

Radio Shack Corp. 4.649 (378th)

Plano-

J.C. Penny Co. 32.923 (43rd)

Electronic Data Systems 21.596 (87th)

Triad Hospitals Inc. 3.966 (436th)

Irving-

Kimberly-Clark Corp. 14.348 (141st)

Advance PCS Inc. 14.111 (143rd)

Atlanta-

Home Depot 64.816 (13th)

UPS 33.485 (42nd)

Bellsouth 22.635 (80th)

Coca-Cola Co. 21.044 (91st)

Georgia Pacific 20.255 (94th)

Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. 17.33 (112th)

Delta 13.303 (150th)

The Southern Co. 11.251 (178th)

Genuine Parts Co. 8.449 (244th)

Suntrust Banks Inc. 7.071 (272nd)

Mirant Corp. 5.863 (314th)

Cox Communications Inc 5.759 (318th)

Alpharetta-

Newell-Rubbermaid Inc. 7.750 (251st)

Duluth-

AGCO Corp. 3.495 (476th)

Note: I left out AFLAC in Columbus and Mohawk Industries in Calhoun on purpose because I don't think those cities are part of the ATL metro.

So each metro has 14 unless I made a mistake.

The total Revenue of Dallas' companies comes to 365.8132 Billion (58% of which comes from Exxon-Mobil) and an average of 26 billion a company.

The total Revenue of Atlanta's companies comes to a much smaller 242.506 Billion and an average of 17 billion a company.

The average position of a Dallas company on the F-500 list is 227.

The average position of an Atlanta company on the F-500 list is 188.

So I guess someone could make a case that either city is higher in the corporate world but I think the evidence shows that Dallas is higher due to the giant Exxon-Mobile company. So in short, I change my mind.

Great figures GatechGuy...I always thought Atlanta was higher then Dallas in the corporate world...but I guess it could go either way.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeah, I think that Atlanta has higher profile companies that might give people the wrong impression, but it can hold its own. I would certainly rank it as a top 5 corporate center in the US.

Spades - I thought Texas Instruments was headquartered in downtown Fort Worth.  What happened?

Also, would someone be able to determine where in Dallas, just to compare CBD & edge city locations.  Just find it interesting - that's all.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

This is the best I can tell about where in Dallas they are located.

#166 Texas Instruments - N. Dallas, LBJ Freeway

#169 Tenet Healthcare - N. Dallas, Galleria

#195 TXU - Downtown

#204 Centex - Uptown

#205 Dean Foods - Uptown

#318 Southwest Airlines - Love Field

#460 Affiliated Computer Services - Uptown

#492 Brinker International - N. Dallas, LBJ Freeway

BTW, maybe you were thinking of RadioShack, which is headquartered in Fort Worth.

I voted for Dallas because I like they're buildings a little bit more.It looks more dense.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Not really. Driving north through downtown, there is one point where there are huge skyscrapers very densly laid out. While I agree Dallas is an awesome city, Atlanta has the edge in a skyline because they have several, not just one. Go and drive the 285 loop and there are nice highrise clusters up to 580 ft. tall that would make any city proud by themselves.

They're pretty similar, in my opinion.

However, Ft Worth's skyline is fairly impressive in its own right.
